Rebel 2009 7m

Postby Wawando » Fri Sep 12, 2008 1:12 am

Hi,

I have been riding the new Rebel 09 7m in the part days. In the previous years i have been riding a Rebel 07 7m that i really love. Normally with a wave board, always 20m lines.

First thing: one pump pumps nice, everything neat out of the bag, bla, bla. I experimented different 5th line lengths, but just leave it as it came it is perfect.

The conditions where 1m waves, chop ocean, wind 15-30 knots in the inside, 40++ on the outside with big lulls everywhere. :jump:

In the air, the kite is super stable. Just like the 9m, you can't get it to fall, no matter how hard you pull the front lines, it never overflyes.

Turning speed is fast, like any 7m. Still a little slower than Rebel 7m that is super fast. Turning arc is also wider than 2007.

A huge gain is in power. It is much more powerfull. Similar to 2008 but with more power.

I notice a very, very big gain in stability when hit by monster gusts. It just eats them with no distortion.

Responsiveness to turning commands even with depower fully in is very, very good.
Another very nice feature is the kite flying at the edge of the window when you let go the bar at 45 degrees or less. It doesn't start dropping, just flies nicelly and drops exactly what i would expect.

I dropped the 9m in a wave and the relaunche is just pull the back line (have it on movie in a kite cam)

Rebel 09 7m is more powerfull and much, much more stable in the air than the 07 version.

It has less depower and little longer depower stroke. It might be because of the "size difference".
I would say the 2009 Rebel 6m might be the equivalent to the 2007 7m.

I can see me out in 35 knots ok, but not at 45+ like i did with 2007 version.

Not as snappy and live as the 2007 7m, but then the 6m might be like it. The improvements in power and specially stability are really worth it!
I see myself riding this kite in very, very little wind, (close to 15 knots).

9m and 6m are my bet now for a perfect gear if you have lots of days at 35++ knots.

More info when i have a nice wind day...

Hi,

We had one session in super swell and super strong and super gusty. A typical "heavy metal" Guincho day! :jump:
Definitly less highend than 2007 for these blasting conditions.
Super, super steady. Man it feels so good! It was one of those really hard Guincho days. Kites, blow because of gusts, kites on the water all over the place, even had to rescue a windsurfer. (have it filmed on my kite cam :-) ). All this in 7m and 6m sizes, of course. :jump:
This kite is a weapon from i imagine very close to 15, up to 30 or much more if swell/gusts are not as strong as i have at my spot.
I got my 2009 bar today. Very similar to last year. Only change if you need!
See you!

Hey great review,

North Windrange is 17-36knts for the 7 and 18-38 for the 6... With an 80kg rider... Seems normal to me that you cannot picture your self in 45knts+ with the 7 (I would extend to the 6m for that matter). I think you are an animal and quite good to push the envelop so much...

Thanks for your reviews, I guess I can go with the 8 for my crappy 23 knots with lulls at 15 and gusts at 35+. Yep some of us are stuck with such great conditions... ;-)

Hi,

@flipper: I would say that the 7m wind ranges are very accurate. I am @ 82 kg. I would advise you to test the kite if you can. Each size has its characteristics.

Super session!! Unlike the forecast, we had a super nice day today: 1m waves with big sets (double head of my 185cm) and super steady wind.

I confirmed the expected lowend of the 2009 7m. Mates where out in 9m and 12m and i wasperfect on my 7m! It then picked up quickly and i confirmed that it really is a powerfull kite.

Today it is a historical day for me. I have been trying lots of kites in the past years and when i got "back home" to my Rebel 2007 7m, it was alwasy the: nice to be back home feeling.
Well for the first time, today, (in epic perfect conditions , by the way - super good wind and super waves), i prefered then 2009 version.

The main thing is the gust absorving and response to turning even with kite all depowered and back lines slack. All with much less attention required from the rider than the 2007 version.
The new rebel also has much less bar pressure. It has the ideal pressure for my taste.

BUT - there is always a but - i must change for the 6m to have the same windrange. I need a really high wind kite.

At 30 knots, on the 2007 version, having less power allowed me to leave the kite more in the power zone having a better drifting while surfing than i did with the 2009 version. When i get used to it, things will get better, of course, as now i am very used to Rebel 2007 style (more than 2 years riding it).

By the way, get a Oregon atc3k if you can. It is super (just change batteries every 2h to be sure you don't get cut in the middle... :-? )

Oh, the 2009 bar grip is much softer than 2008 and surprisingly very comfortable!

One or more people have thrown a kitecam on Rebel 09. does the 4 strut design of 2009 Rebel seriously impact the framing of the shot (since you can't attach to center strut) or is this inconsequential from that distance ?

second question, is there room on 09 Rebel to pass some velcro straps behind the strut (as shown in first picture @ http://www.camrig.com/kitecam.php#checkStitches).

Hi, the pictures above where taken from a vid on the Rebel 2009 7m. The only thing is that at the beginning it is harder to point in the right direction. It is quick with a mate helping.
There is plenty of room in the Rebel 2009 to attach the cam like it is in the picture. It is what i did. On the Ion2, for example, there is little room.

See you!

Hi Wawando,

thanks for your review. I am looking to complement my quiver of Rebels (9m2 2007 + 12 m2 2008) with a new Rebel for the heavy days. As you know, the 9.0 m2 2007 can hold quite a bit of wind. With the 2009 being more powerful, should I go for a 2009 6.0 m2 or a 7.0 m2?
My main focus is on waveriding (fast steering also depowered, stable).

Ciao,

Bruno

PS - I remember those epic days in Guincho from my windsurfing time. Wind blowing off the water, sunshine and full-blown storm at the same time.

Hi,

For my heavy days here at Guincho i will change from the Rebel09 7m for the 6m. The 7m is very powerfull for 35+ gusty that are frequent here.
Guincho gave us fabulous at the end of the summer season (sea and steady wind)!

See you!
