Discussing with several people in the industry I was wondering what the general consumers think about testing before they buy.
In my opinion it is very important now a days to test gear. This year I already see more demos than the last years coming up.
So let's see, if you want to try before you buy...

Up here in Canada, its difficult to test things especially when the season starts so late that if you don't order before it starts things start selling out (waroos for example). I ordered mine without even ever seeing one. Luckily they have the 30 day guarantee.

Testing before buying is the only way to go, and the only advice you can trust.

Absolutely.
As I am a rep for a few brands, I will definately test the gear before recommending it as well. If it's not up to scratch - it doesn't get
a plug from me - regardless of brand or model.
I also have gear for people to try, ready to go to form their
own opinion - and strongly suggest it to everyone.

no, i never test any equipment by myself before i buy. why?
"testing" takes ages and is very difficult. you have try a board/kite more than one time and under different conditions to judge it. and you have to be a very experienced surfer to notice the minor differences between the products.
from 20 years surfing i learned that a board i like from the beginning has often very limited developing potential. a board i like from the start is often very similar to my old boards, no wonder. same for kites of course.
very often i didn't like a board from the start, but i did get used to it. and pretty often these boards help me a lot to make big steps. remembering the first mutant, the first wake with bindings and so on ...
if i have to decide which board/kite to buy, i rely on friends who have not only tested it a few times, but used it regular. and sometimes a board/kite is such a beautifull piece of plastic, there is no need to test it ...

Test and demo days are too rare to be of use.
I watch and trust the local sponsored guys. They soon tell you if any of their gear sucks (I had one local sponsored guy tell me he hated his new bow this weekend)...
But I generally see what they are riding this year, then buy it second hand next year. This year I am looking forward to some fifth line action with a North Vegas.
Sweet.

No, never test...
because I buy them on eBay, for 400€, one year later than production year.
And trust me, I don't have that much choice under these conditions but still manage to have gear that ROCKS
So I believe that's fine, I always know how good the kite is before I buy it... (well... I had a few bad surprise but you always have
)
