You get old inner tubes from the bike shop.
Cut into length required.
You wrap the end in duct tape and then burn a hole throgh it.
Remove footstap screw and fit tube under strap and rescrew.
I have used bought ones made by Best. They have a large round tube which holds your foot in without having to pull up over your heel.
Easier to get in and out of than the homemade ones.

I twisted my ankle once
using a bicycle inner tube as a heelstrap. After a bad
landing from a jump, one strap came off but I couldn't kick
the other one off.
A fat round heelstrap would work
better in this case. It would be easier to kick off.
My suggestion is, if you are going to make your own,
use the inner tube method (as described above) but
enclose it in pipe insulation foam (the kind made for keeping 1/2"
plumbing pipes from freezing in the winter). Then wrap with
electrical tape or duct tape to keep it all together. This rounded
strap will be easier to get out of. Messing up your ankle can
cause you to miss lots of good sesh's now that summer is
in it's way!
Good luck!

sounds good
but
why do I need to wrap the ends of the tube in duck tape? Can I not just burn a hole directly in the tube?

It wont be as strong,or will tear.
The insulation idea is good.As I said,I found the ones with foam tube better.as they dont lock in as much .

Try wakeboard bindings rather than stuffing around with duct tape and burning holes tru old bike tubes.

If you use lace bindings, you can leave the laces loose so you can get in and out easy. Even loose, they are better than kiteboard straps...Unless you're into board-off stuff. Me? I'm happy to keep the board ON for a whole session.
Injuries happen when you come down with one foot out and one in. This happens all the time with kiteboard straps, which in my book makes them more apt to cause an injury than wake bindings. I've had my feet come out of the straps just from turning aggressively.
