Q: How to make my 2002 kite "safe"?

Postby hundlola » Wed Jun 05, 2013 10:59 am

Hi, I did a 3 day course last summer and want to start kiting now (I still have 2 practice days at the kiteschool left, which i will take before).

I got to the following Kite with a board included for 100€, but now I am a little bit worried if the equipment isn´t a little bit too old. I have an 2002 Wipika Free Air AR 3.3 Kite with a quite simple bar and a Directional-Board.
But there is not a safetyleash on the bar, only a big chickenloop.

Do you think I should better sell everything again and look for anything newer, more developed or is it safe enough to get a good bar with the needed safetytools on it?
Is the board good enough for a beginner?

Thank you for your answers.

I also would invest a bit more money. You will learn much faster, plus you will safe a lot of money in medical bills ;-)

You need to have at least a bar that has a working quick release, since this will be your life saver!
And lines not too old and used.
So, get a bar as new as possible.
Ask us for advice about working quick releases, we will help you.
Kite is not that important, just needs a good restart so you won't get frustrated.

Why a directional? Do you want to go into waves? If not, get a twintip...much easier to ride and to jibe.

we have a guy at my launch with an old kite he's been trying to learn for about 5 years though I haven't seen him this year I think he gave up. other people with absolutely zero athletic abilities with new gear and lessons start riding in a week or month. your choice. It's a good sport, it really makes me sad that people are willing to trade years for some money.

The only safe thing to do with the old kite is to turn it into a bean bag chair or a hammock.... Most stuff within the last 5 years is pretty good if it has not been abused. If you can do some supervised riding at your local spot / school do that as every time you go out you'll know a bit more about what you want....and you'll have a measure for what to look at in the market.

Alright, then I´ll resell it and look for newer Equipment after I took my lessons.

I thought maybe there is an easy way of adding some tool or anything, but I see it makes a big difference if you have better stuff and as I can afford it, I guess you are right, that I will have much more fun with better equipment.

I will ask here again in summer when I see some used Kite if you think it`s a good Deal :-)

Thank you for your quick advices!

stick it in a garage somewhere its not really worth selling, but when you have a bit of experience it would definitely be a bit of fun down at your local beach with your new kite buddies. especially the board

Hi, i just saw this offer for a 2010 naish colt with a naish bar for 350€ (with board 390):
I think a 12m kite is best for my first one (location: neusiedlersee, austria, my weight: 74kg)?
willhaben.at/iad/kaufen-und-verkaufen/sport-sportgeraete/naish-cult-12m-modell-2010-und-board-60966127?adId=60966127
Do you think its okay to begin with that one?
Thx for your advices!

Don't rush into buying kit. Easy to say because 'everyone' does it but you'll save yourself a lot of hassle and waste if you wait a little bit. There is a lot of second hand stuff around so it is very unlikely that you'll miss a good deal by waiting tiil you know better what you want. If you want to spend money start at your body and work out from there. I.e. cold water spot get a good wet suit. After that get a good harness. Schools generally have decent kit but it's used by lots of people so it doesn't settle on your body. The comfyier you are the quicker you'll learn. Maybe look at a decent board.... And, lastly go for a kite or two. Lessons (or at very least some time with decent kiters) would be the place to start....

I re-read your first post and see that you've done the 3 day course and have a couple of days left. Did you buy the 2002 kite after going on the course? Did you ask your instructors what they though about it? What kind of stuff did you use on the course? Familiarity with stuff that you already know is a good starting point when you're starting. You will probably learn quicker and progress faster if you buy stuff that's similar to what you have been learning on so far as it removes the need to 'learn' how to handle different equipment.
