Flat water spots for kitefoil

Postby jur0 » Sun Apr 14, 2024 7:17 am

I improve the most in flat water or in small chop. I am looking for such spots, it could be anywhere, I can travel. The wind between 12 and 25 knots, at least 3-4 times per week and the water deep enough for the foil (90cm mast).

I visited just 1 spot like that, it was Puerto Velero in Colombia (in January).

Can you suggest some spots and when is the best time to be there?

I was in Lo Stagnone a couple of years ago and there is just shallow water. I'm looking for a place with deep water as I use foil.

Check out Langebaan in South Africa, El Gouna in Egypt, or Tarifa in Spain. These spots offer consistent flat water or small chop with wind between 12 and 25 knots. Their peak seasons vary: Langebaan is best from November to March; El Gouna from March to November; and Tarifa from April to October. Kiteboarders consider these renowned locations for their reliable wind and suitable water conditions, making them ideal destinations for foiling.

Not sure if Tarifa could qualify as a flat water spot, at least with poniente.

El Gouna is one of the best places I´ve been to. You have to walk and pass through the reef to the deep areas, though.

I would add:

· Dakhla lagoon, at least when the wind is not very strong.
· Trabucador, close to Barcelona.
· Cabanas de Tavira (South of Portugal). Thermals in summer, perfect for lightwind foiling. Beautiful place with few kites in the water.
· Viana do Castelo (North of Portugal), right side, next to the pier.
· Exumas in the Bahamas. Best place in the World if you have a sailboat.
