Can anyone give me an idea where to stay that would be close to most of the good launch sites, also at SPI?

Thanks,

Corpus I found not to be very kite friendly. I could not find many great launch sites. Bird Island Basin is one place. Geared more towards windsurfers.

S Padre is much more kite friendly. Go to the North Flats just north of the convention center on the Laguna side for flat water. Visit Shane & Cliff at SPI Kiteboarding on the main street to get a $10.00 entry pass good for a year.

72 Kiteboarder should be able to answer all of your questions being the forum expert from this area! I only get to go down to this kiting mecca once a year.

From my experience, I thought that Bird Island Basin was not open to Kites anymore. Too bad because it was amazing for windsurfing so would be even better for kiting.

Wildcat in Portland seems to be THE place to go for steady wind. Lots of friendly people their who are always willing to help launch and land. Great to talk to as well- real texas Hospitality!

I would start at http://www.prokitesurf.com as they have a guide to local beaches. Jeff Howard is a great guy.

Enjoy Corpus, I wish that I was there!

first choose your launch - if coast, you want a condo, if south bay,
there's a holiday inn, wildcat has a couple small motels near it...
you can call the shop - they are very helpful.

as to the launches, i think they are pretty friendly - much easier than say maui or rhodes or .... but then again, SPI is the easiest launch i have ever seen. the only hazard is your own car... ;-)

Bird Island was closed to kiting, at least as of last fall when I checked.

I started going to Wildcat last fall. It's a nice launch, friendly kiters, but very small. Since I was a beginner and the winds were onshore I spent a lot of time walking back out. For anyone that can go upwind though it's nice.
