I've taken a lesson and I know how to setup, launch, body drag and ride on a board. I don't know if I can ride upwind. Under the link for kitebeaches above (http://www.kitebeaches.com/kitebeaches/) there are over 30 beaches listed for Hatteras.

Would it be a stupid move for me to head out to one of these beaches alone and ride? If not, which of these beaches are good for a beginner?

Drive down to Hatteras and walk into one of the Real shops (Waves or Buxton) tell them your skill level and they'll hook you up with the best beach for you based on that days wind.

It has a decent launch. Plenty but not too many helpful helpers kicking around. The water is deep enough to handle some stupidity, but still comfortable to touch bottom and take time to reattach your head. The shore is essentially a gentle cove, slightly protected reducing chop, with a high probability of catching you as you fly by downwind on your way to whatever the next state may be. Good for Southwesties, I think. Bad for anything east. Baaaad.

I was in Hatteras last month- such a fun place to ride, and certainly to practice your skills!!

As you saw on Kitebeaches, there are, indeed, a LOT of places to ride (which is part of the reason why it's so cool there!). I agree with first reply - walk in to any of the REAL shops and they will most certainly hook you up and keep you safe and happy!

(If you're more north on the island, towards, Kitty Hawk, you can go to Kitty Hawk Kites and ask there. I think they're by mm 15? 13.5?)
