I'm headed to the Marcos Island area in mid April for work. Is it worth bringing my kites? If so, where are the launches? Are there any shops in the area to contact?

I highly recommend you check out http://fksa.org/forumdisplay.php?f=24 . The people that post there are highly knowledgable on local launches and there are even some posts specifically about Marcos Island.
