I just booked my flight to Hatteras in two weeks and I need to pack my board and two kites in one bag to save money. What is the best way to travel with gear? Should I try to carryon the kites and then pack the board and other gear for check? Is it safe to check a board or can you bring it on like those people with strollers?

It's best to buy a board bag with wheels. I have the NSI deluxe. I travel with 2 boards, 3 kites (16, 12, 10). I wrap the boards in the kites. I also bring a wheeled hockey bag for the rest of my luggage (helmet, bars, harness, clothes, etc). I make sure each bag is below 50 pds. I dress as a golfer (golf shirt, golf hat and wear a button that says "I love golf"). I get to the check in early and I am very polite to the employees. I have been traveling with kite equipment for the past 6 years and have yet to pay any additional fees to bring my gear.

I have only flown in North and South America with 5 different airlines but I don't see why you would have any problems in OZ.
