400km downwind trip Philippines - End of February

Postby marinehazard » Fri Jan 01, 2010 2:34 pm

Hi Everyone!

we are planning a 400km downwind exploring trip along the north coast of the Philippines. There are plenty of flat water and wave spots to be found along the route. The NE Monsoon (Amihan) is strong and reliable this time of the year. We are going to have a jetski for backup and a light truck to transport gear. There is the possibility of renting a boat as well. Time frame is last Week of February to first week of March.

Anyone up for an adventure?

What is the total amount of time you are devoting to the 400km trip? Are you going to be using a speed/distance board or will you be on a twintip, taking your time to stop and play along the way? I am interested.

We were thinking of about 10 to 14 days, about 22.2. to 7.3. Most of us will be on twintips, some ride waveboards and we will definitely be taking our time, I think something like riding downwind for about 3hours every day to the next good spot and then staying and riding there. We did some exploring there last year and found very nice spots. And who knows what else is out there?

Any idea on cost/budget for the 14 days to cover support, transport, food required for each participant?

it depends on how many people join, but I guess 500 USD would cover the trip. At the moment we are 5 people that have committed, and another 10 that dont know for sure yet.

Great initiative ! :thumb: I am keen and already adjusting my agenda to cater for that.
Cheers,
Alex

PS I have a 47 Lagoon catamaran available for that sort of venture. Can take 6-8 riders.
The only problem being that to bring the boat there we would have to beat dead against the wind all the way from Singapore. The cat is in Phuket at the moment.
Contact me if interested.

PS: for your info:
Pacific Tropical Cyclones
During February, there is little chance of encountering a tropical storm in the eastern North Pacific. However, in the western North Pacific over an average 10-year period, 4 tropical cyclones should reach force 8 (> 34 kts) and of these half should reach typhoon strength (> 64 kts).

hey, its great you're interested!

I am definitely keen on the sail boat. How long do you think it would take to go upwind such a big distance? I would be up for it, my sailing experience is rather small though. There is the possibility of a very experienced sailor coming along, i will check that today.

I know there is the slight possibility of tropical storms, but from my experience the chances of typhoons in February are very slim though.

I wouldn't envisage that without a professional skipper in charge, preferably a rider.

Ok, well 17 days is quite a while.... Wouldn't mind though. How many crew members would one need having a professional skipper? The guy i am talking about is not a rider, do you know someone? Unfortunately i couldn't figure out how much 388 units of fuel are.

With our trips before we always rented one of the local bankas (outrigger boats). These are very affordabe and come with a local skipper.

Skipper + 2 would do it nicely. Skipper +3 even better (shorter watches). I know skippers who would fit the bill, but they would bill us accordingly!

Are there bankas large enough to accommodate riders and gear? The image I have of them are more smallish day boats (quite wet!), Perhaps are there big versions of them. That would be a more convenient and cheaper solution in the end than wasting 16 days beating against the NE trades instead of actual riding with them. An old adage describes beating as sailing for twice the distance at half the speed and three times the discomfort.
