July weast coast of France - need advice

Found some nice-price tickets to La Rochelle on the french west coast.
Tempted to go there but are wondering about the windstats.
Have looked at the guru and windfinder and the conclusion is not very wind-safe.
..however I've experienced that that is not the whole story always.
Anybody with experience of the area, for example Ile de ré and other spots in the area ?
Will have access to a car so driving a couple of hours is not a problem.
