Where to travel (kitesurfer beginner)?

Postby exkoria » Wed Oct 27, 2010 8:23 am

Hi guys, first post here.

I've just started kitesurfing and I want to ask for advice where to travel to get the following (in February or March):

- Shallow (clear, and warm water :-)
- Flat to choppy but not really waves.
- Kid friendly
- Possibility to take kitesurfing lessons.
- Overall not to expensive.

Does anyone know if Cabarete can have all this? As I understand it it can get lots of waves and it might also not be very shallow? The reason I want shallow is because I'm a total rookie :-)

Thanks for help!

Depends where you are coming from - Europe, USA or other?

In June I took the family to the Indian Resort at Le Morne, Mauritius. Two boys (15 & 11) got lessons in super lagoon waist high deep, very safe. Also serious waves out at the reef for the advanced rider. Good spot for the whole family and got good value on flights and hotel (all-inclusive).

Thanks for the reply.

Sounds nice!

I live in Sweden and I've mostly looked at Caribbean and SE asia (Thailand, Vietnam etc). Actually I've been looking at Mauritius also but could not find something that fits our budget. We can travel to Cabarete with all-inclusive from ~$4500 for 2 weeks and it's hard to find anything that matches that.

The Florida Keys could be a good place to go, we have a number of kiting companies along the chain of Islands, from Islamorada to Key West. You can find the options that would best suit your budget online ,if you need any more help or info feel free to contact us.

Thanks for the replies guys!

I haven't thought of key west. Must check it out.

but I've checked out Costa Rica already. It seems really nice! More or less exactly what we're after. But I must investigate accomodation and transfer to playa copal. Hopefully it's possible to go to the airport closer to playa copal but I don't know that yet.

Miami Key Biscayne is also nice, and Feb/Mar good winds.

Mauritius should not have wind, only during northern summer (June-Sept). But then would be good to learn on the kitebeach.

Egypt is always an option, but wind could be bad. Hit or miss.
Thailand is an alternative for sure..Hua Hin! I went last March and had about 50% of wind, so, every second day. February had more wind. I should be there again next year.

Cabarete has no shallow water. Check Cuba as well...should be good too! Or Bahamas!
