Kiteboarding instructor - world traveler! The question!

Hi all!

I am pretty sure everyone at least once thought how cool it would be to do nothing but travel around the world and kite everywhere! :D

We all have families and jobs and mostly stuck to our local beaches, so the only option is to go on vacation to dream tropical islands and snowy mountains. But what if you decided that the life is short and nothing is going to make you happier than a kite journey across the globe?

Let's call it a mini-retirement! How would you go about it? I see multiple options. If you have enough savings, it's easy, you just need to have the balls to pull this trigger. You can also get a freelance job and combine remote work with kiteboarding fun. You can even become a pro and then it's gonna be your job! :D

Another option that I would like to discuss is to become a kiteboarding instructor (if you are not one already) and travel from one school to another following the wind and warmth!

Who has already done something like that?
How would you plan such trip?

Please share your thoughts and experiences!

Alex

Hi.
Well "all roads lead to Rome", or so the saying goes.
The safest way is to set up a business in which you excell.
Make it grow and delegate the tasks that chew up your time and soul.
Enjoy the things you are good at.
Employ staff and control from afar your company while sipping cool drinks and living the life you want.
Thats one way.

Totally agree, that's the best solution!
Don't want to advertise, but the 4 hour workweek book explains it in details.
Although, statistically very few people will achieve that, so working as an instructor is still a good option especially for young people who have more time than money/responsibilities.

get an instructor license.
Then check locations for wind and warm water/air on www.splocs.com
Then contact local kite schools and ask for a job.
Do it, you will love it!

Thanks, Toby! I'm already in the process, contacting schools.
What's the best resource for kiteboarding job postings?

I'm planning my kite odyssey now as a matter of fact. I'll be embarking around the beginning of november hitting Asia, Australia, south america and cape town. I might even launch a kite on antarctica next December.

I've been doing all my business travel on BA this year so that I can get emerald status on one world and will therefore have ridiculous baggae allowances and access to the first class lounge which will guarantee me at least one shower every once in a while. I believe I'll get the around the world flight paid for with miles as well. I'm also gonna get some skiing in as well.

I don't plan on doing any work on my trip, but I plan on catching up on some books, perhaps doing some writing and studying. I'll go to bschool in fall 2012 when it's over.

Oh and lots and lots of sh@gging.

Im budgeting about 20k for the 8 months. I could spend a lot more or a lot less than that.

@ChickenTikka
Cool! That's one impressive plan!
Can you share some more details about the spots you are planning to hit on those continents? Also, are you going to stay in hotels/hostels? Do you have a detailed plan or you will figure everything out on the go? Are you going alone?

I'll do a bit of slumming it in the hostels here and there. I'm not sure if 27 is too old to be hanging out in Hostels, but I'm a bit of an old soul.

I'm planning on staying put in Cape Town for at least a month. I went there last feb and just loved it. So I'll try and do a short term rental on that.

I'm planning on hitting up boracay because I haven't been there. I did Mui Ne last Christmas and found it adequate, very cheap, but not as exciting as I'd like it to be. This was peak season as well.

Ill probably do a solid month in Australia/New Zealand.

South America, I'll probably give myself 2-3 months in.

I have lived in Asia the past 5 years so I dont need to spend that much time there. I'll be going to Europe/North America after my trip so no reason to rush up there.

As of yet no one is up for doing the whole thing with me, which is probably for the best. I think I'll get some company along the way depending on who's available. Maybe someone from KiteForum can join me for part of it.
