I have heard that the west of the island is the best place.

Was there this time last year for two weeks.
Stayed and kited at Le Morne at the south west corner of the island. Lagoon of approx 1km x 1km with max waist deep warm flat water. Most days approx 15-18 knots. Absolutely perfect for beginners or those practicing new moves etc. Also around the corner there are three large reef breaks with the famous 'one eye' wave. Lots of serious kiters out there. So the best of both worlds.

Stayed at the Indian Resort because my sons were getting lessons at Club Mistral which operated from the hotel beach (that may have changed). There are approx 4 schools operating in the lagoon.

any thoughts on accomodation. just after a beach hut/simple room. Not bothered abou sea views or anything like that just location and cost.

2 years ago I've stayed in a villa (2 rooms + a huge balcony) in La Gaulette for 60 Euros, 4x4 included). There were cheaper single rooms as well. La Gaulette is ~4 km from the kite spot at Le Morne (Club Mistral).

I've found a car to be very useful. The island is well worth exploring.
