Sydney in December and January - any good?

Postby BrianMaiden » Sat Oct 29, 2011 6:02 pm

Hi i'm going to be in Coogee, Sydney for two months over new year, from what i can tell the best places to kite are Dolls point and some wave kiting at Cronulla - is that right?

I've heard the wind isn't that strong, just light thermals is that right? I'm 95kg and have a 13m C4 and a wainman 9m smoke - realistically, will i get much kiting in?

Would there be more wind up the coast towards Brisbane? I know the west coast is where its at but i can only go the the east coast

I'm going to buy a car so i can travel locally but i have to be based in Sydney.

Looking forward to hooking up with any local kiters!

Thanks

It's not WA, but it is actually not too bad either - better than I heard people talk of it before I went. Usually windier at airport area - summer kicks up some good seabreeze. The thing that sux about Sydney kiting is the traffic, if u gotta commute right across town to go kiting after work it will do your head in. Then there are the beaches - sand areas are in hot demand with everyone. I like it tho, good surf too if you can hussle the crowds.

Hey thanks for that thats good to know.

As for the traffic, I live in London, it takes me an hour and a half to get to anywhere half decent to kite so it doesn't bother me. And as for crowds, i reckon after going to Tarifa (spain) ANYWHERE would seem mellow.

Thanks for the reply I'm well up for it now

I wouldn't mind for that. It'd be so worth it when you get there!

Did a two week stint in 2006 to kite the east coast (brisbane to Sidnay) at the beginning of january.
Had exactly four days of wind and ended up pub crawling most of the way.
If you have a choice go somewhere where the wind is more garanteed.

Cheers for the replies guys. I've signed up for 7 weeks in Sydney now. I surf as much as kitesurf and i know there are some good breaks around sydney even if they are busy. Also i spent a year in Sydney 14 years ago and i know it's an amazing city with loads to do so it'll be sweet :naughty:

As has been stated in countless posts before, go to seabreeze.com.au for all things kite related to Australia. Espically the wind charts
