Im curious about the waves there. Anyone have any links to some videos of people riding waves during windy season? Can anyone describe the waves here at this time? How close are accommodations to the waves?

Hi mmeyers12,

If you like to kite waves, don't head all the way down to Kalpitiya, but go to Kandathoduwa

Due to it's situation, Kalpitiya doesn't get any proper waves (check google maps, it's behind Kandakuliya cap that shelters it from the swell.)

To waveride, you have essentially 2 options:

a) a reef about 2km off shore of Alankuda beach (I strongly suggest to go there with a backup boat, as the coast turns away at Kandakuliya, and you might get into serious trouble if something breaks)

b) the coast of Kandathoduwa,

In Kandathoduwa you will get miles and miles of beach break with side/side-on wind and south-western swell. Waves are typically between 5-8 ft, and they are rather powerful. It's a totally uncrowded spot, you and your buddies will be the only ones on the water for sure. So you can do downwinders for miles and miles and miles, without anyone interfering, shredding the beach break and cutting back with your fins only inches from the sand without any troubles :D , It's also an excellent playground for strapless freeriding. You won't play in a muddy lagoon with a dodgy underground, but on the 28 C warm see with nice kickers and constant wind..

The great thing in this area of Sri Lanka is that the wind is always there from May till end of September. So you just don't have any stress when to ride. You just go whenever you feel like, before breakfast, after lunch, even during full moon (which is a beautiful experience by the way :thumb: )

Kandathoduwa is about 40 km further South than Kalpitiya (only about 90km from Airport).
Due to a local thermical effect, the wind is typically more steady than in Kalpityia. The beach is very wide (more than 100m ) , and the beach gradient at the water is steep enough that you can cut back as close as 1m from the shore (which is pure sand, no spines, no shells).
It is still very little developed, you will experience genuine Sri Lanka.

The best lodging option is Villa Arcadia. It's a totally beautiful, new villa in a stunning palm garden, directly at the beach, with it's own 45ft long pool and private cook.
If you go with a group of friends, you can't beat it for comfort and price (it will be cheaper than staying in one of the overpriced options in Kalpityia, and ways more beautiful).

I mentioned the local thermical effect: it is also responsible that the place is much less hot than Kalpitiya in summer time. Temperature actually rarely rises above 29 degrees Celsius.

For those who feel adventurous, villa-arcadia.com also organizes day trips into the Dutch bay and Portugal bay, where you will find buttery smooth flat water and steady wind. Your less adventurous spouses and girlfriends can relax in the meantime at the pool, or visit Unesco World heritages or stunning National Parks (might be even more adventurous ;) )

If you like more information, write me a pm , or check out http://www.villa-arcadia.com
