I was about to head to Isla Holbox to take advantage of a great wind forecast for next week when the local kite instructor, Gabo, told me they recently banned kiting in the whole island until further notice. What a close call! Apparently the fishermen objected and the local authorities sided with them. Anyway, I figured I post here to prevent anyone from getting a nasty surprise... And thanks a TON to Gabo for the heads up.

That is sad news!
I went when all was open...had an amazing time...what a beautiful paradise!
Did they ban motor boats as well? Imhuess they are worse for the nature and fishermen...
Pls keep us informed aboutnfurther development!

There is a moratorium on kiting off the island beaches until a public meeting on February 21 at which time there is supposed to be a defined area(s) for kiting as there are currently in many kite locations around the world. I was kiting at Puenta Caracol with 20 knot winds yesterday, 20 minutes by boat from Isla Holbox. Saturday kiters enjoyed 30 knot winds and 3 meter waves at El Cuyo close to here. This season has had some great down winders, on the last one the GPS showed 50 km covered. It has been my fortune to enjoy Holbox for 6 seasons, I learned to kite here and plan to continue for years to come as my local Canadian waters are a wee bit chilly this time of year!~
