SF during that time is great for kiting; the season usually ends about the first week of October so you should be OK. For most of the bay area the wind starts in the early afternoon (thermal) and on most days will be around 15-19 knots; only exception is Sherman Island which is more towards Sacramento and that spot usually has wind all day during that time of year and also usually a bit stronger around 20-24 knots. It's fresh water too, but as it's a river delta there are no waves there. And it's probably around a 2 hour drive from Sunnyvale

I usually stayed within or near the bay so I can't really comment on spots like Ocean beach, Stinson Beach or Waddell, but all spots should be reasonable close (within an hour's drive?) from Sunnyvale. The closest spot to your location (and one of the most wind consistent) is 3rd avenue which is located in Foster City; shouldn't be more than a 20 minute drive at most.

If you're going into the ocean you will need a full 4-3 wetsuit for sure. If you're going to be kiting at 3rd you can get away with a 3-2 shorty. The only place you won't need a wetsuit is Sherman.

For more info in wave spots etc I recommend browsing Ikitesurf.com forum as you can find some useful information about the various spots there.

Enjoy & be on the lookout for whitey
