I'm traveling intercontinentally for the first time from SA with kiteboarding equipment. Is it worth leaving the board behind and rent as I go? Lufthansa and Swiss see to charge a huge amount for oversized bags or second bags...any idea? Thx

The airlines have become a lot stricter and the cost to ship your kitesurfing gear often is more than just renting. The kite and harness are possible, but it doesn't make much sense to travel with your board.
Try and find a place to rent in advance, as they will often do a better deal in advance to secure the booking.
It's also a good chance to try some new gear out!
Enjoy your trip
