Cape Town/Hermanus conditions in April - good for beginners?

Postby bad-wind » Tue Mar 18, 2014 9:51 am

Hi, I'm travelling to South Africa in April and first week of May with a friend. We're both beginners - have kitesurfed on Kenya coast where the water is flat and the wind consistent, and comfortable going both ways (oo err!) but not much beyond that.

Is there anywhere around Cape Town (or further afield) where we might get decent conditions? We also have a friend in Hermanus we will stay with a bit.

Thanks for any info or links.

Hi. It's not likely that you're going to get daily kitesurfing conditions. If it blows, it might just be for a day, unlike peak season when it can blow for a week solid, at high strength. If you're coming anyway, there's plenty to do outside of kite. Watch the wind forecast and be ready to go to Langebaan. Otherwise regular surfing is not a bad idea. There are many days when you can kite the NW wind, which is the rain and storm bringer. The summer wind here is the SE. The NW is a little gusty and can vary rapidly with squalls etc...not ideal for beginners.

Hermanus is good for whale watching. Not certain about the kiting there. Big fish in area too!

Thanks for the info. We'll also be bringing climbing gear so doubt we'll be bored when the wind's dead. Tempting to leave the kites behind though - possibly not worth the hassle as it sounds like it'll be less than perfect :(
