Wind, NE Brazil

Postby BernieTomic1 » Sun Nov 05, 2017 9:36 am

Hi guys,

I am going to NE Brazil for 2 weeks from end of the coming week, about 2 hours north of Fortaleza.
Supposedly the wind should be 20-35 knots and good kite sizes should be 7-10 m, but looking on Windfinder, it says 12-18 knots.
Is the wind less than normal? Do I need to bring a 12 m as well for sub 15 knot conditions? My plan at first was to just bring a 7 and a 10.

It is always more wind than forecasted.

Currently forecast is a bit strange...lighter wind forecasted, average 12 gusting 15...and we had around 20 knots.

And I am 1 hr north of Fortaleza...should be few knots more than here.

Where exactly do you go ?

Hi Toby,

I am going to Ilha do Guajiru.
My 12 is a Rebel, while the 7 and 10 are XR5:s, so taking the Rebel would mean bringing one extra 5-line bar too. I could also bring a 15 Free, as that would save the extra bar, but of course the extra cloth will mean a little more weight too, and a 15 might be too big?
Apparently wind is less in the morning and picking up later, so for early morning sessions a 12 or even a 15 might be a good idea?

Looks like the wind does not really start before 9 in the morning? Is it usually that way? No early sessions?

take the 12m just in case, but you should be fine with the 7 and 9m.
if the sky is clear all ready in the morning, you will have wind.
look at the link from Ocean View (above) which is a live weather station in Cumbuco.
IMO. Ilha do Guajiru will be a few knots stronger.

edit:
or... get in touch with Pousada 7beaufort, they rent out Core equipment, in case you don't take the 12m and its needed...

that is Cumbuco. Ilha should start earlier. and is at least 5 knots stronger than Cumbuco.

Here real wind vs forecast (so add 5 knots for Cumbuco, and 10 for Ilha do Guajiru).

PS: it is a 3 hr drive from Fortaleza.

Thanks guys!
My understanding from your posts is that it is realistic to go out at 6-7 in the morning in Ilha, but that it requires a bigger kite, where both a 12 m and even a 15 m should be alright as wind might be 10-20 knots until around 9 in the morning, where it would typically go up quite rapidly.
Would you prefer the 12 or the 15, also considering the advantage with being able to use the same bar with the 15?

The PM stays in my outbox for some reason.
I do have an e-mail adress to 7Bft.
Are early morning sessions in NE Brazil enjoyable or is it often too gusty to be fun until around 9 in the morning?
