Just live somewhere in the middle, then you can sample all the beaches! We have random wind patterns, though the most common if a SW

There are a couple of kite shops in London but they aren't all that good. Most of the beaches are 1-1.5hrs drive away and most have good shops close by. So if you need anything just get it when you drive to the beach. There are also a lot of UK shops doing mail order, so you shouldn't have any probs sourcing any gear.
As to where and when to kite, and how to make some quick kitesurfing friends in London, a group of us have been doing an evening drinks meet in a central London pub for 2 years. So when you are in London (and this goes for all kitesurfers visiting London) just drop in to the pub and say hi. You will be greeted by a mixed group, anything from 6 to 30 of us from all over the world, all at different levels of riding. We'll let you know where the best spots are and where the best shops are too. We regularly arrange weekend group trips to spots that are further away, Cornwall, Wales etc. and it's fairly easy to get a lift with someone if you don't have a car whilest you are over here.

Lived in London for almost 3 years until last summer. Usually went south to Poole or Hayling Island or on an easterly wind to Whitstable. In westerly winds Weymouth also is really good. And of course for a long weekend Cornwall really rocks.

best time of year then i guess
loads of wind in london but no beaches
plenty of beaches though with in an hr or twos drive
I've just moved back Its hell being so far from my nice big sandy beaches in wales.
Did manage a 5:30 mission on the south coast before a 2 hr drive back to london for work now that is keen
