Just make sure whatever you do not to realease to safety. Never release the kite to safety even when being lofted to shore. In fact once you've crashed with something onshore and there's a risk of getting pulled even further onshore be sure to not realease the kite.
I think RickI always says "ride it out and walk it off". Good safety advice in my opinion.

Sorry Toby but I gotta call bullshit on that title. This has less to do with onshore winds being the culprit and more to do with stupid people in front of a camera. You can't do anything about stupid and we are all a little stupid sometimes.

The fact is onshore winds are different. When something goes wrong it pulls you onto to something hard... Just a fact... Not matter how good you are... An advanced kiter can't do much if a gust or squall comes or if they happen to break a back line or what ever... or does a trick and gets board stuck in sand in shallows...
Good to see reality.
Better upwind...

Onshore, sideshore, sideshore-on, offshore, whatever. If you have a problem that lasts long enough, regardless of wind direction and in most places, you will end up "finding" something hard to run into. All this guy needed was to set-up a buffer zone to avoid potential problems and give himself enough space to recover from one if it happened. I am not saying that onshore winds are the most desirable to ride in but they can be fine as long as a few simple rules are followed and you check your ego at the door which this guy didn't do. Hey, we all make bad calls and luckily nobody got seriously hurt, buddy is lucky he wasn't a couple inches over to feel the full wrath of the windsurfers fin. Just really don't think it is logical or fair to blame the onshore wind in this case, it was truly rider error this time just trying to get on film.
