Hi any NZ kiters,
looking for some advice for a trip to NZ in february next year. I am coming out for a month and will be staying in a place called 'Keri Keri'.
Will be looking for the best spots to ride and possibly hire some gear. We are planning to rent a car so will be happy to drive to find the locations.
I am bringing my girlfriend who is still learning so would also be good to find some flat water spots with a lot of space!
Any kiteschools in the area?
Thanks,
Ollie.

Hi BF,
We have recently opened a school in Ruakaka, about half way between Auckland and Kerikeri. We would be more than happy to talk you about lessons etc:
info@ruakakakitesports.co.nz
There aren't any places I know of in NZ that rent gear, we do have demo boards available from our board making business tho if that will help.

There is a LOT of very good riding to be had in the north of NZ, but sometimes a little local knowlege is needed to track down the best spots. We'd be more than happy to discuss your options over a coffee if you stop by on your way north.
Best regards,
Dave and Su Kay

Hi,
thanks for the reply, we are flying in to Auckland at the beginning of feb.
The plan is to rent a car and drive to Keri-Keri so we may be able to stop by on the way. I am trying to avoid bringing too much kiting equipment so will have to look into renting gear a little more.
I have been kiting for a few years but don't get much time on the water, my Girlfriend is just starting out so I am hoping to spend maybe a week kiting and get her some more lessons, hopefully get her up on the board.
Some local knowledge would be great, especially of we can hook up with someone local to Keri-Keri who wants to go kiting every day for a week
Thanks,
Ollie.

Don't go to Auckland at that time of year. Wind is unreliable and the traffic will shock you. Northland will have better wind and no traffic. Really though you should be heading to the South island... even less people and even more wind... much more wind.
How long r u in NZ for?

place called rangiputa about an hour north of kerikeri...huge natural harbour....very sweet spot. On the other side of the karikari peninsula you have big long expanse of surf beach...also very sweet spot. Closer to keri you have Matauri bay also not a bad spot but can be very busy with swimmers/boats etc....so can be tricky. Hope helps. any more send me a PM

North Island.. summer is the off season. Only about 15 knots of sea breeze. that is EXTREMELY light by NZ standards. A place in Northland that gets good wind is up by Cape Reinga (place gets >15 >3 hrs/day at least 80% of the year and has the main directions sorted). It's a very exposed spot and it's very remote but there is a sandspit with waves on either side, still i don't recommend you kite there. Summer is the off season too with lighter winds (still over 15 knots though).
Taranaki, Wellington all work well during summer if you are prepared to travel.
If you are gonna kite in Auckland then head to Manukau Heads for channelled thermals of 15-25 knots. Don't go to Orewa.
