Snow Closes Big Island Observatories

Mauna Kea on the Big Island is where scientists use massive telescopes to scan the heavens. But lately, they haven't seen much of the sky thanks to snowstorms that began hitting the summit Friday and which forced the observatories to close.
"Well, they shut down operations for the last three nights and I assume they'll shut down tonight and again the next two nights. There's just no point observing if you can't see anything," said Mauna Kea Weather Center Forecast Meteorologist Ryan Lyman Monday.
The weather center didn't realize there would be so much snow. With the white stuff comes danger.
"Obviously, ice on the road is the major factor. I mean, you're talking roads that are ... right along the side of a cliff. You don't want to be sliding off these roads," Lyman said.
In the past, snow on the ground meant fun on the summit for visitors. It's the kind of fun people were having just one year ago as they frolicked in the white powder. Some even used boogie boards to try and ride it.
However, officials said this time park rangers have decided to keep people out.
"I think they closed it Friday night and then they left it closed till this morning," Lyman said. "They opened it up this morning because the weather looked better and then they shut it down again this afternoon because it went bad again."
And don't expect things to improve. Forecasters predict more of the white stuff will be coming tomorrow and Wednesday.
