BA changed their policies reg. sporting equipment etc.
A KF user just mailed me this info:
Thank you for coming back to us about our new rules regarding the carriage of certain items of sporting equipment.
As we discussed on the phone this morning, I have spoken to two members of British Airways staff from our passenger handling department at London Heathrow Airport. They have confirmed that they are still accepting kite surfboards for travel as part of the sporting equipment allowance. Kite surfboards are not on the list of sporting equipment that we no longer carry as they are smaller in size.
I hope this helps and that you will continue to fly with British Airways.
Best regards
British Airways Customer Relations
That is good news for the kitesurfers!
We need more pressure on them to make this official...and maybe also to get windsurfers and surfers back onto BA...so keep pushing them!!!

Sounds like good news.....but
I called them a few weeks ago, they said they would carry my gear but it would cost me £120!
Has this now changed? would be nice to get an official statement, their policy seems to vary depending on who you talk to.

Hi....
I got the email from BA this morning after a long conversation with the BA rep. Essentially she said that as a kiteboard wasn't bigger than a snowboard, they wouldn't have a problem. She didn't mention anything about an extra charge - she just said that they'd treat it like a snowboard. She told me to take the email to the airport with me and there wouldn't be a problem.
Which is all good news - but they need to clarify this on their website. I'll write them a letter this weekend and see if we can make it happen. The downer is that they clearly DO have a problem with surfboards still....

What you get on the phone really doesn't matter.
It's what the person checking in the bags says. If you have something in writing, then *maybe* you can prove your point, but it's the person checking the bags that makes that decision.
Check
this out (not BA, but another big corporation's customer service line)...
The people on the phone have no clue, and aren't the ones deciding/enforcing things.

I absolutely agree...but at least today's email is logical (to the extent that it recognises the issue) and is an honest attempt by BA to be helpful....which is a good thing.
And I think that having recognised the issue, we now have a useful stepping stone in terms of having BA officially recognise kiteboards on their website. Thats my aim - and hopefully we'll have some success by building from here. I'll put together an entirely constructive letter this weekend.
Its just a pity that no concession is being shown for our windsurfing and surfing friends...
