Airline Pilots, Kiteboard on Layovers?

Postby RustyChain » Thu Feb 08, 2018 5:01 pm

Hello all,

I'm brand new to kiteblarding. I'm an airline pilot in the US. I was wondering if there are any pilots on here that take their rigs on trips. I live in the Midwest, I'm not opposed to snow kiteing, but I find myself in Florida frequently and it would be great to be able to do some kiteboarding while at work. I was thinking a split board.

Anyone do this and have any tips?

Thanks

We get a lot of pilots coming thru South Padre. Some bring their own gear and others will rent just a board from Air Padre but bring their own kites. This happens a lot! Wherever you go you might find a cheap board rental which saves you a lot of luggage space.

Last time I flew in to Puerto Rico I went right to the beach and got in a session while the wife checked in and hit the beach.
After my session I was talking to a guy and found out he came in on the same flight... turns out he was my pilot!
Said he often kites on layovers. In this case, he could go to the local shop and rent everything he needed. I'm not sure if he travels with a harness or anything, but that'd be the best. Bring all your water clothing and harness... rent the rest.

On this same long weekend trip I kited with a couple Dutch guys who came in on a submarine with the royal netherlands Navy. (I think that's the story) Certainly looked like young guns right off the ship. Said they worked in the engine room so were able to find room to stash a kiteboard easier than most crew. They brought one setup to the beach and took turns on it. Funny guys to chat with for sure.

If you find a favorite spot and lay over there frequently...consider getting a 2nd rig and keeping it at your carrier's baggage claim office or operations office.

A couple of foil kites and a split board plus a harness that will fold flat and you have a nice travel setup that will fit easily in a duffel bag.

Niceee.

I know several pilots who kite.

More and more are getting split boards.

Always good to have your own gear with you.

Enjoy!

I know. The old joke "How do you know you their is a pilot at the party? He will tell you."

Thanks for the info.

I really hadn't considered board rental but that is a good idea.

Carrying stuff is a pain. If you're there more than 3-4 times a month I'd just buy a second setup to leave at your layover hotel. They all have store rooms and are pretty cool about crews leaving stuff there. Just hook up the front desk with some chocolates or whatever your home state is known for.
