Suggestion for a quiver

Postby k2thiago » Sat Feb 24, 2018 3:03 pm

Hi everyone!

I am building my kite quiver and would like a suggestion: my first kite and the one that I ride most is a Wainman hawaii 10.5. I've got a core xr5 8m for the stronger days (I'm talking about no more than 28-30 kn) and i am looking to buy a bigger size for light wind days (from 10 to 15ish i think). I'm still a (really stoked) beginner, my weight varies between 65 and 68kg, I ride mostly on flat waters using TTs. Which size would be better, a 12m or a 13.5? I'm probably going to get another core, xr5 or xr4.

Thanks

If you are planning on keeping the Wainman, the 12 is too close and XR’s have plenty of range so I’d go with the 13.5. As the kites get bigger, the gaps between sizes can get bigger.

k2thiago is also a matter of tastes, bigger will be much difficult to relaunch but will get you also much powered in low wind...

you are light weight, in any case from 10 to 15 knots I would go for a 17m light wind kite, the ozone ZephyrV5 it's an excellent choice

edit: thinking better you could really be too light for a 17m, and also if the ZephyrV5 have an amazing wind range, a 15/13m could be a wiser choice, in any case if you have the opportunity to try the ZephyrV5 do it because it's amazing simple, reliable and fun as light wind kite

Being the same weight as you I would suggest that a 17m Zephyr, or other similarly sized light wind kite, will be too powerful for a lightweight rider. I get along fine on a 13m kite for light winds, and even better now on a 13m Chrono V2. Tried bigger kites and they don't seem to offer much more low end (I can get going even on a TT below 10 knots with the 13m Chrono V2) but have zero wind range.

It depends somewhat on your wind, ideally you would have something like a 10.5 and a 14 and maybe an 8. But a 14 won't really get you to 10 knots unless you have a foil. A 15m lightwind-specific kite (like a contra, turbine, etc) might do the trick but a 17m would be better, but personally I'm overpowered on a 17m in like 13-14 knots lol, so I have a 12m to go up to about 20 kts. I think 17/10.5 is a bit of a gap, BUT, if you live in a spot where you have flat water and can ride your 10.5 around 15 kts, or your wind is either 10-15 or 20+ with not much in between, you could get away with that. One thing I would not do is add a 12, that would be very close to the 10.5 imo, but a 13.5 could be ok. It won't get you to the 10 knots without a foil but it'd still be a good quiver from 13kt and up, or so.

Personally I'm the same weight as you and I run:
10-15 kts: 12m + foil
15-20 kts: 12m + twintip/surfboard
20-28ish kts: 10m + twintip/surfboard
25-30 kts: 7m + surfboard
30+ kts: 7m + twintip

For your weight and type of riding Core XR LW 15m for 7-15 knots would be the largest kite you’d ever need.
12m is slow, so is 13.5 but they’d get you flying in 9 knots and above.
Though a gap from 8m to 12/13.5/15 is too wide to have just two sizes (unless you’re keeping your 10.5)

11m XR would get you stoked and riding in 10+ knots or 8-10-15 quiver would work even better if you can get two kites

Thanks for all the inputs. I will keep the 10.5 (i love that Wainman!), so seems like now will be a matter of choosing between 13.5 or 15LW. Some poeple have the opinion that the 15LW would be too much for my weight... with the Wainman, around 15 kn I can start riding, definitely need more work to keep going and stay upwind but its possible. For a while I was considering the Turbine, however I am more inclined to stay with core, as I wont need another bar to do so. I have plans to get into foiling for sure, but not right now. I don't think I will try to ride under 10 kn at this point at least.
So, is the construction of the 15LW different from the 13.5? Some people told me that all this bigger kites would be quite slow and heavy to handle... also I am wondering: wouldn't I be too overpowered on a 15m when the wind reach the 14ish?
Thanks

LW kites usually have different, lighter construction compared to smaller sizes and I know that 15/17 sizes Core XR LW and Turbine are that way. I think 13m Turbine is LW construction, but I’m not sure about XR.
15m is my lightwind kite at my 90 kg weight and 17 is too big for me.
Logically 13m/13.5 should be right size for you, in my honest opinion.
You can always add 10m extensions to your lines for ultimate lightwind riding 13m size

Turbine is amazing kite so is the XR. 13.5 will get you riding in 9-16 knots

I´ve checked on their websites, the 13m Turbine is indeed LW construction, but for the Cores, the LW starts on the 15m. Even doh, I tend to think that the 13.m still being a better choice, is that correct?

no kite is too big for you unless you are like 30kg, it just depends how much wind you get. if your wind is most often around 10 knots a bigger kite like a 17m would be what you want. if its closer to 15 knots in your 10-15 range, a 13 would be good. it just depends.

the guy saying a 17m is too big for him at 90kg clearly lives in a place with decent wind, as im 30kg lighter and would gladly have a 17 in my quiver
