Jackson Hole,USA, Corona Extra Winter Tour

Postby Toby » Wed Feb 04, 2004 1:02 pm

February, Monday 2

Welcome in Uncle Sam’s country ! For the first time in its history, the Corona Extra Winter Tour moves into the American territory.

This morning riders and organizers meet in Jackson Hole, Wyoming, at the Super 8 hotel where the crew stays. Registration stops at noon and one hour later, everybody listen to the first skippers meeting of the week, on the contest area.

10 skiers, 23 snowboarders and 2 women especially came from Switzerland, France, Norway, Canada and from all the United States. The accustomed riders are there, joined by lots of super motivated new comers…

Even if the wind doesn’t honor this first racing day, people discover the crazy-covered-of-powder spot, chose by Windzup (the local co-organizer). Situated in the middle of a Natural State Park and only a few miles far from the famous Yellowstone, the place is unique… So, let’s be careful of bears, wolves, mooses and other buffalos !

Next meeting is tomorrow at 10 on the spot. Fifteen snowboarders will run qualifyers to win their seat in the main contest and join the 8 pre-qualifyed leading riders after the Col du Lautaret event.

February, Wednesday 3

The night was short for the Corona Extra Winter Tour team ! The excellent first party of the week brought everybody together at the Log Cabin, a Jackson Hole bar…

This morning, it’s hard to wake up and a few even have jaw cramps because of having too much laughed the night before !

At 10am the snowboarders are ready to start their qualifyers. They all listen to the race director who explains them some details about the race. As the heats will begin, the 10 knots of wind die and the red flag of standby is up…

The sky is now clear and the sun shines, so we discover and enjoy a real Hollywood landscape ; riders talk together and keep ready to compete, but… The wind doesn’t get stronger and the contest is canceled for the day at 4pm.

Today the organizers went to check another extraordinary spot around… If we’re lucky and if the wind helps us tomorrow, this new day could be absolutly unforgettable !

February, Wednesday 4

Riders and organizers are now used to the American time : they wake up early and everybody meets on the contest area at 10am.

This morning, all the guys move together into a different spot. The place is great and everybody prays for the wind. But the situation doesn’t get better and the race director, Stéphane Bodou, drives with some riders and organizers to a few different sites, to check the conditions overthere.

At last the Corona Extra Winter Tour chooses to go back on spot of the days before cuz the conditions seems to be better there. As the staff sets up the spot with banners, flags and tents, the riders get ready and try the ground.

Around 3pm, the wind is fixed over 8 knots… But only for one heat. At least the first snowboarders qualifyer round is done : Paul Macaj (US) and Chip Wasson (US) join the main contest.

At 5pm, the wind still sleeps and the contest is cancelled for the day. Even if the wind gives us a hard time, the guys keep smilling. Everybody enjoy a new territory with a crazy potential : there are huge spots covered of powder everywhere… If the wind wakes up, the contest will be great tomorrow !

February, Thursday 5

This morning, some faces look relaxed and some others seem to be worst than usually… Last night some guys chose to go to bed early, as the others prefered to enjoy the local nightlife !

Everybody is in a hurry to jump in the cars, to go as fast as possible on the contest site.

From 10am, the race director, the organizers and the riders drive from one spot to the other to check the wind conditions. Today, the sky is perfectly blue and the landscape is even more beautiful than the other days. The spots look even better and the riders are super motivated to ride on these paths…

At 2pm, the official flags still do not move, so the organization announces that the day is off. People decides to enjoy the place in different ways : snowmobiles trips, ski or snowboard slopes through the trees, drive back to the valley…

The atmosphere is still great and doesn’t change because of the lack of wind. Everybody is already motivated for tomorrow !

FYI:

i have been competeing at the event.........there was no wind for the heats today, but we all drove back towards jackson, and had a sick ......expresion session........30 some kites out was awesome......rode for over 3 hours, was great to ride and try all sorts of mad loops, handel passes, and ride together.........was a world mix, even got a moon light ride in!

Contests are great, but this was a unreal free ride........

saw a bunch of moose before we got there, got the photo taken with the herd, must have been the good luck moose, cause then there was wind!

p.s. i am from key west.....the only moose we have is a guy in a dress!

February, Friday 6

This morning the organizers and the riders of the Corona Extra Winter Tour have a great surprise : the wind blows up on the spot !

There’s a smile on every face and everyone gets ready to enjoy as much as possible this perfect day.

The organization choses a new huge, windy and never touched site, a few miles up to the first one. The weather is great and everybody stands up the freezing weather in a good mood. At 11.30am, the wind is between 10 and 11 knots, so the snowboarders finish to run their qualifyers.

Right after the race director opens the first women’s heat of the week. Agnès Fontenay (F) and Renée Hanks (US), both snowboarders, give a real show on the race area. People are astonished… These ladies could compete against lots of guys !

Then the race director asks for the skieurs and does the drawing of their main round. Until 3pm they run their heats and the show is crazy, the American riders dare everything to protect their positions against the Euro champs… Everyone can appreciate and keeps watching the actual leading guys fighting against some super motivated challengers ! But the wind soon dies and the contest is stopped just before the second semi final.

If the conditions are as good as it supposed to be, tomorrow will be an unforgettable last day !

February, Saturday 7

Everybody starts this last day of the American stop of the Corona Extra Winter Tour full of motivation. At 10am the whole crew is on the contest site, for the usual morning’s meeting.

The sky is grey and soon, the snow starts to fall. The organizers keep ready and everything is ok to go on the skier’s contest stopped the day before.

At 2.30pm the wind finally blows over than 8 knots and the skier’s round goes on with the second semi final. The heats are often interrupted (cuz the wind is gusty), but finally done. Fabrice Tripier-Mondancin (F), Christopher Dons (N/F), Fabio Ingrosso (CH) and Bjorn Kaupang (N), all of them finalists, stay on the contest area, ready to start their final. At 5pm the night comes and the wind still doesn’t blow, so the organizers must decide to stop the contest.

There’s no ski and snowboard rankings for this event in Jackson Hole, because none round were totally done. Only the women have a ranking, thanks to the one heat they run. The riders and the organizers discovered some extraordinary places and met some American people motivated to invest themselves in snowkiting. Even if the wind wasn’t there, everybody keeps smiling and looks forward to be in Silvaplana (Switzerland), for the third stop of the 2004 Corona Extra Winter Tour !

Tonight the meeting is at the Mangie Moose, a downtown bar, for the last party of the week which will probably be crazy !

This was a great event at a great location with great people. The conditions were less than epic yet everyone still had a great time. This was the first time so many kites had flown at the same time in Togwotee Pass, there were 40 snowkites spread over 8 miles of highway from upwind to downwind and up hill to over the highway! Most of the people I met with last week had one of their biggest jumps (flights) ever and one of their best days of snowkiting. The parties and the comaraderie made it one of the funnest snowkite trips I've had.

BIG THANKS go out to all of the sponsors who made this week possible;

Red Bull, Pabst Blue Ribbon, Dakine, Semnoz Winter Tour, Windzup, Cloudveil, PASA, Voile', & Ultra Nectar for the tight hoody's.

Stop 2 : Jackson Hole, USA

For the first time in its history, the Corona Extra Winter Tour moved to the USA, to organize the second stop of its 2004 tour. From February 2 to February 7, 10 skiers, 23 snowboarders and 2 women came from Switzerland, Norway, Canada, France and USA, and all met in Jackson Hole, Wyoming.

The Corona Extra Winter Tour’s family became bigger by greeting some American riders curious and super motivated to build themselves a real place in Snowkiting. Windzup, the local co-organizer, had found a spot full of snow, with flats and natural kickers, in the very middle of a natural state park, close to famous Yellowstone.

During this event, only the women run one round, the other categories could not get any ranking because of the lack of wind ! The very reactive organization succeeded in finishing the snowboard qualifyers and the skiers heats… Except the final one, so there were no ranking possible.

This lack of wind didn’t change the great atmosphere between the riders who discovered some huge territories, with an extraordinary potential. The spots are everywhere, all full of snow, huge and absolutly magnificent. This place has everything to become famous in snowkiting. Everyone in the Corona Extra Winter Tour will remember this cowboys country spot !

Everybody’s now waiting for the next and third stop of the 2004 Corona Extra Winter Tour in Silvaplana, Switzerland, from February 28 to March 3. If you just can’t wait, keep watching the Wanna Get High DVD or checking the http://www.semnozkitesurfing.com website !
