3rd EVENT : Silvaplana, SWITZERLAND

After an unforgettable event in United States, it’s already time for the third stop of the 2004 Corona Extra Winter Tour !
For the second time in it’s history, the organizers of the Corona Extra Winter Tour bring their team in Switzerland, exactly in Silvaplana.
From the 28th of February to the 3rd of March, the riders will live five competing days on the now very famous frozen lake of Silvaplana.
The schedule will be crazy on this freestyle and tricks event : there will be kickers and sliders built on the contest area. The current leading guys get ready to ride with lots of very good competitors, all super motivated after the last Jackson Hole event !

February, Saturday 28
The third stop of the 2004 Corona Extra Winter Tour is open ! This morning the riders from France, Norway, Denmark, Germany, Austria, England and Switzerland all come for the registrations. Everything is ready to welcome them on the Silvaplana’s frozen lake.
For this third event of the year, 13 snowboarders, 11 skiers, 4 women and 3 juniors are registered. At 1pm, Stefan Popprath (the local coorganizer) and Stéphane Bodou ( the race director) start the first skippers meeting of the week.
The snowboarders are expected to open the contest, followed by the juniors, the women and the skiers. As they wait for the first start, the riders warm up and train on the lake : but Yarle Skoie ( a norwegian competitor) hurts himself after a bad landing.
Once Yarle is in good hands, the organizers and the race director decide to stop the contest for the day : the wind conditions are too gusty and the lake’s ground is too hard. The riders who tested the lake today confirm it : It’s the best decision to make.
Tomorrow, the staff will maybe move the race area, depending on the wind conditions. Before that, the Corona Extra Winter Tour’s family will meet tonight for a welcome aperitif at the Kiter Bar then at the Julier Palace in Silvaplana…
February, Saturday 28

This morning, the staff of the Corona Extra Winter Tour wakes up early ! At 9am, the crew is ready on the competition area, outside the Swiss Kitesurf School of Silvaplana.
After having checked different places, the organizers and the race director decide to move the contest site, where there was yesterday not snow enough and where the wind was too gusty. The crew is efficient and at 11am, the flags,tents and banners are set up in Sils, at the end of the Silvaplana’s lake.
There’s a lot more snow on the spot and it’s a very beautiful place… The riders arrive and seem to be very happy to try this place. The north wind keeps blowing up but its direction soon changes and it starts to be very gusty… Everybody keeps ready but at 3pm the day is cancelled… As Yarle Skoie, standing up on his two legs, was just arriving to watch his friends on the spot !
So… The tribe has a great power and get ready to enjoy the party organized tonight at the Silvaplana’s Bar Püf… Already famous after the crazy-funky nights the Corona Extra Winter Tour lived there last year !

Riders and organizers meet this morning on the contest area situated at the end of the Silvaplana’s lake, in Sils.
Yesterday, the party was great and everyone had a crazy time… So the Corona Extra Winter Tour’s tribe is in a very good mood this morning…
The sky is perfectly blue and the sun warms up the bodies ! Everyone is ready to start the contest with the first snowboarders round, but people keep being in stand by because the wind is still temperamental : it doesn’t stabilize over 8 knots and stays very gusty…
The race director and the organizers cancel the competing day at 2pm, so that the riders who want can go and check some other spots like the one of Bernina Pass.
Tomorrow the snowboarders must be at 9am on the contest site, followed by the women and the juniors, then by the skiers.
March, Monday 1st

Day 4
This morning, the Corona Extra Winter Tour wakes up early ! At 9 am,all the snowboaders meet the organizers in Sils, to enjoy this first windy day.
There are between 17 and 20 knots of wind, and the temperature is only –17°C !
The snowboarders try to keep warm by getting ready to start their first round. Finally the contest can begin ! The riders show how much their level increases between each event…
Sigve Botnen (N), Guillaume Chastagnol (F), Romain Fabretti (F) and Patrick Koller (CH) are together in the final. Guillaume wins, followed by Romain, Sigve and Patrick.
The north-east wind keeps blowing up around 10 knots and the juniors Pittin (CH), Banks (GB) and Bubmann (N) start to compete. Special congrats to the young Thomas Banks who grabs the second place, behind Bubmann and followed by Pittin. Right after, Kari-Anne Tragethon (N) wins, followed by Estelle Lambelet (F), Fabienne Kaufmann (CH) and Agnès Fontenay (F).
At 1.30pm, the wind dies and the skiers must wait… But one hour later, the contest is cancelled. The last day of this 3rd stop of the 2004 Corona Extra Winter Tour will start early : tomorrow the skiers must be at 8.45am on the spot !

Day 5
Right after their breakfast, the skiers of the Corona Extra Winter Tour meet the organizers on the contest site in Sils.
It’s 8.45am, the sun shines and the riders are all ready to compete.
After having waited for 2 hours, the wind suddenly wakes up : there are 10 to 14 knots blowing up from north and it brings a huge smile on every face !
Finally the skier’s round starts. The riders need to be very technical in such a light wind and Fabio Ingrosso (CH), Bjorn Kaupang (N), Fabrice Tripier-Mondancin (F) and Christopher Dons (F/N) join the final.
This swiss skiers round of the 2004 Corona Extra Winter Tour is won by the local Ingrosso, followed by Tripier-Mondancin, the young Kaupang and Dons.
Right after, the women, juniors and snowboarders are in stand-by, but the wind is now super light and very gusty, so the race director closes the contest at 2pm.
Even if the the stop watch had to be stopped a few times (when there were less than 10 knots), the skiers heats run well and each category had the opportunity to run a round.
This third stop of the Corona Extra Winter Tour should finish in the best way, with an apero and a Pizza Party all night long !
