Winters coming so to cope with the strong winds we get here, I need a smaller kite

Current kites are 17m Skoop, 12m Toro and 169 Litewave, 68kg

What kite do ya reckon would fit in and not overlap my current kites?

cheers

A kite of about 4m projected area is generally the way to go...

Kites with this projected area include...

8m X2
8m AERO
6.3 Airblast
7.5m ARX
7.5m AR5
plus many others...

However get a kite that is stable and quite modern...

Also some of the new kites can handle 30 knots in the bigger sizes...

The 10m X2 is a classic example and 'high end' kites like the Wipika Airblast can be used in 30 knots with the 8.3m size (approx 6m projected).

However the board has a big effect as well. a 160cm board may be too big for these winds.... get a board of 140cm or similiar with hard sharp edges on it...

The obvious answer is 8m Toro. If you like your 12m Toro, stay with the Toro.

It's easier to adjust to high winds if your high wind kite is the same as your more used kite. Same flying feel, no need to adjust.

the Toro is a more relaxing kite compared to the X2.
Therefore the X2 jumps higher.

The Wipika Airblast is projected 6.3 and has a total surface of 8.6 sqm.

I can't say that you should use a X2 10 in 30 knts. I'm 90 kgs and I can hold the X2 10 in gusts up to 30 knts, but then I can't edge or do anything, because I'm overpowered like hell !
I say the X2 10 has an wind range of 17-27 knts. But from 24 knots on you will fly damn high and long and you should be experienced.

So I would suggest a 8 sqm surface area kite.
And if you have the Toro 12 stay with the Toro.

Greetings

Yeah with someone your weight (under 70 kgs) a 10m X2 in 30 knots could be a bit volatile.

Best to go with a more intermediate orientated kite like the Toro, AERO or Hydro....

Then again in 30 knots and over.... most kite are deemed "advanced".

I'm 65kg and ride a WT137.

My present quiver is Toro 14,10,8.

I find the 10&14 combination to be 'perfect' for my weight & board & local conditions.

The 14 will take me comfortably up to 17 knots. The 10 up to 23/24knots. I have tried both kites in more wind and although they were managable, I did not enjoy them too much.

So I decided that I need a smaller kite for really windy days of up to 30knots and more.

I went for the Toro 8 but now have 2nd thoughts about my decision. In 30 knots I find this kite uncomfortable so when the wind is really blowing hard I still don't enjoy the ride. Plus the 8 has too much overlap with the 10. I'm not saying that the 8 is a bad kite (quite the contrary), I'm just saying that for my weight,etc.. I should have gone for something else.

I think a size 6 flat inflatable would be too small to worth buying so I'm now considering the F.One Dream 7m. Maybe this is the 'perfect' size that I'm missing???

For 'timba14' I also agree that the toro 8 would meet his needs (20-30 knots) and would complement his toro 12 nicely.

Regards,
Mike

Something else on small kites:

Is there a gap between a X2-12 and a Airblast 6.3 (2001)?

AB 6.3 is bigger than a X2-8 but lacks power in its lower windrange so it makes me wonder...

Thanx in advance

I also have had good luck with the Mach 1 9.1. The other day I had it out in average wind of 36 mph with the average high gust of 47. At the same time the average lull was 27. Not super fun, but if well timed, big air was happening. I would say that the kite's sweet spot is 25 to 35 mph. Oh yea, even in the highest gusts, I still had depower range.

I also agree that the 9.1 Mach 1 is a great kite for 20-30 knots! I weigh 130 and use it starting at around 18 up to 30. My boyfriend Stefan weighs about 180 and uses it up to 38 knots! However, keep in mind that it is a high performance kite that is REALLY a high performance kite. I think the 12.1 and 15.1 Mach 1 can be easily handled by beginners who are riding upwind somewhat consistently and who have good kite control and skills.
