A good way of doing an emergency slow down when the beach is getting too close is to stick your butt in the water. You'll loose most of your speed. A very efficient board-scratch saving technique.

Another possibility to slow down is to bring slowly the kite up and turning your board to go down wind. At first you will get some more speed, but when going in the direction of the wind you will have no more power.

Catch the Breeze
it is also helpful, when you ride without leash, that you try to keep one foot in the footstraps. This way your board will be always quiet close to you and you don't have to bodydrag to far. When you feel you miss the landing, just put up your tips of the toes so you won't loose it.
You can also be dragged and swim with your feet in the wind, this way you also get good height.
Good luck!

Hi Toby, sorry but I don't follow you, if you mean landing with one foot in the straps sounds like a fast way to bugger you knee or ankle, isn't it better to kick the board off completely if you lose one foot while in the air?
