i bought a pair of neoprene socks, which give me enough warmth to stay out for a couple hours in cold water, while gaving the tactile feel and control of going barefoot.
unless you are in incredibly cold water or need soles for protection against a sharp beach, this seems like a good way to go. i was never able to enjoy cramming booties into the straps.
they aren't as warm as real booties--but they make otherwise impossible water bearable and uncomfortable water fine. i am in the seattle area and have been happy with them as long as i keep the rest of my body warm.
the socks also come in different thicknesses, which should provide greater warmth. my pair is only .5mm, but i got a thicker pair to try on cold days. they cost about $30.

I've been thinking about switching to the dive booties to wear... I have a pair of prolimit booties, but you can't dry step into the straps and they catch every damn line on the beach I try to walk over...

I hate booties!
With booties the board-offs are f**** difficult...
But in areas with reefs etc it is better to have them!!!

I hate booties, it's a struggle to get into your straps, then you get trapped by at least one foot when you wipe-out. My feet still get cold and probably from the loss of circulation in my foot due to the boots.
Why do boots always stink like you had a poo in them no matter how clean and carefull you are ?
Must try neoprene socks then. Still going to stink though. Oh by the way, I dont have smelly feet normally.

Try a pair of fleece socks under neoprene socks. A real soft, warm, foot like feeling. Both wear out pretty fast though, when either used in tandem or alone but better than booties.

Booties are okay if they have the split toe. It gives you good warmth/board feed back. They aren't too expensive ($45) and they last forever.
