3D web viewable of my Surf 5-1

Some of you may have already seen this on
the yahoo group...

I've posted a 3D viewable of a new kite specific
surfboard I am developing. Also some pictures
showing how the sandwich core was produced.

You may need to wait a bit before you are
prompted for a plug-in. The model is derived
directly from the 3D CAD model used to machine
the core and tooling. The prototype is being
glassed now. This model will be available
after I've had some fun testing it.

what program do you use to create your designs? i've got SolidWorks right now and am doing some tinkering with it. also, what method did you use to create your surfboard?

Devin, I use Pro/Engineer. Solidworks is a great program but I don't think it has quite the surfacing capabilities and analysis tools. These are key to making the smooth flowing (curvature continuous) surfaces of a board.

The main steps are to make clean curves for the rocker, deck and outline. Then extrude or sweep surfaces along those curves and merge/intersect them to create the board. Apply variable rounds to do the rail. Then start
adjusting the curves to get a nice looking shape with the right overall size.

Then I use Pro/Manufacturing to do all the CNC programming which is parametrically attached to the model. That means if I make changes to
the shape of the board then the CNC tool paths will update automatically.

The 3D web viewable was exported as an iges file from Pro, converted to a triangle mesh and then brought into the Cult3D design software. The graphics was laid out in Corel and then mapped to the 3D model.
