RED BULL KITE FREEZE TAKES FLIGHT
WINTER KITE BOARDING EVENT TO LAUNCH ON LAKE MINNETONKA, MN

WAYZATA, MN ? October 1, 2002 - Red Bull Kite Freeze, North America's
first-ever freestyle winter kite surfing event, launches January 17 ? 19,
2003 on the frozen expanse of Lake Minnetonka, MN. Combining the power and
fluidity of water-borne kite boarding with the new school energy of
snowboarding and skiing, Red Bull Kite Freeze will be a three-day freestyle
competition which takes place at a large terrain park. Skiers and
snowboarders towed by power kites will launch off of a variety of hits,
jumps and rails.

THE COURSE: A SNOWY EXPANSE

The Red Bull Kite Freeze course fills an area the size of four football
fields. This obstacle course will feature athletes hucking themselves
over ice shacks, jumping over-turned canoes, rails, and tabletops.
Headquarters will be located on the north side of Lake Minnetonka on Spirit
Island (nicknamed "Kite Island" by local athletes). Spectators may best
view the action from the shores of the town of Wayzata, while shuttles will
run between Wayzata Marina and Spirit Island for those seeking to view the
event up close.

THE ATHLETES: A MOTLEY CREW

Red Bull Kite Freeze will feature athletes from a multitude of disciplines;
including skiing, snowboarding, kite surfing and windsurfing from around
the US and Europe. Athletes making their way to Lake Minnetonka include
Adam Koch and Lou Wainman, both Maui-based professional kite surfers who
are pushing the sport to new limits.

WINTER KITE SURFING: AN EMERGING ADRENALINE SPORT

Some call it "snow kiting"; others tag it "winter kite boarding"; others
"kite skiing"?The many names reflect the many faces of this rapidly -
emerging and ever-evolving adrenaline sport. Its origins lie in two polar
opposites: Europeans in the Alps pioneered the use of power kites on snow
to ascend backcountry ski slopes. Wind surfers in Maui adopted kites in a
quest for a more powerful means to harness the wind and conquer the waves.
These roots combine in Red Bull Kite Freeze, where boosting huge airs over
the frozen waters of the Heartland is what it's all about!

Vojta Cervenka, of Golden Valley, MN explains, "The sport has evolved very
quickly here in Minnesota. We first saw kite surfers a few years back on
the Gorge in Oregon. We started kiting on the snow as a means to learn on
water. The more we went out, the more people we saw people start to
emulate what the kite surfers were doing and now it's just blowing up."

Said Jeff Thayer, of MN, "Even though we don't have the huge mountains like
in Colorado, kiting allows you to go just as big, sometimes even bigger,
right here in the Mid-west."

THE SCHEDULE: PRAY FOR WIND

All events to take place at Spirit Island, Lake Minnetonka. Please note: as
the event is wind dependent, times will vary and are approximate based on
conditions.
Admission is Free! All are welcome!
