A terrible accident happened last Thursday, 21st November…
A twenty year old man was killed by his own kitesurf equipment on the beach at Chatelaillon near La Rochelle on the French Atlantic coast.

Surprised by a sudden surge of wind, he was dragged along for several hundred metres by his kite, finally coming to a violent stop against a post after crashing into several obstacles along the way and being dragged along the road behind the beach.

He was transported immediately to hospital but succumbed to his multiple injuries.

Nobody knows all details... Some people say that quick release didn't work, others say that he didn't want to use it !!!

Watch those saftey systems. Commonsense is more important...My saftey release didn't slide through today like it should have and I manually had to unsnag it.. dodgy at the best of times... allways check your equipment.. and allways use a saftey!!

Good judgment and experience are the best, most reliable safety systems available. Many safety devices are a very good idea but may or may not do the trick in a pinch. The best thing best thing is to use you intelligence and experience to keep you free of the more obvious hazards. Luck doesn't last forever, smarts have to kick in sometime. That time seems to have come.

Building up good experience over time, wearing reasonable safety gear and shredding hard well away from shore should help you to enjoy this sport for a long time.

Looks like an increasing number of severe accidents in the past weeks. Maybe the number of kitesurfers worldwide has reached a critical mass which makes more and more of such accidents happen, especially facing the fact that when you look around at the beaches you will notice that only a minority is really concerned about safety. A reason might be that we tend to forget quickly and we are not really interested in learning from the mistakes of others... Think of automobiles and motocycles and guess how many drivers would use a helmet resp. a safety belt if it wasn't required by law - it also shows this side of human character...
