Hi Genome, where in wales do you want to go ?

in north wales there is rhosneigr - anglsey, top wave riding spot. or for flatter water try nearby newborough.

in llandudno also but is pebbly beach.
hells mouth is good too but wavy.

south wales - no isea but also Abersoch is good in north wales.

try the BKSA board too. but rhosneigr / newborough and benlec bay cover most winds.

In South Wales

Aberavon (near Port Talbot) one of the most un-scenic beaches around but one of the best for Kitesurfing. Faces SW so is good from NW round to SE. Picks up a fair amount of swell but getting out back is not too bad unless it's real stormy. Rideable all tides except high springs.

If the wind Swings round towards N head down to the Gower at Llangennith, this beach faces W so is good from a S round to N, and picks up a little more swell than Aberavon. (3 miles of golden beach) popular with surfers so avoid area immediately infront of car park. Rideable all tides

If it goes E try Oxwich Bay (faces S) its also good hear in a SE but if it swings past S towards SW then the headland gets in the way (Beautiful 4 mile beach with parking right on the beach and flat water) Rideable all tides.

If it goes NE try Broughton (Near Llangennith) but beware of the currents in the estuary or try Newton near Porthcawl but beware of the rocks.

These are the main beaches (and safest)that will cover 99% of the wind, there are other spots that can be good at certain tides on certain directions but I'll leave it up to you to discover those for yourself.

Let me know if you need more.

Sean

Just reread your original request so here's a bit more.

If you base yourself in the Swansea or Gower area there will be plenty of beautiful scenary to hand and plenty of things to do. (Not to mention your within 20minutes of all the beaches mentioned)

If you do decide to head to Aberavon there's a good swimming pool for the kids and multisceen cinema along the seafront but apart from that the area is a bit of a dump and not really the place to spend a holiday (but thats why the 3 mile beach is usually empty apart from kitesurfers)

Swansea Bay is very flat water and quite shallow. But because of the huge tides only really rideable mid to high tide (otherwise its a long walk). Best in a S or SE but can be ridden in SW or W when it gets a little gusty.
