Stacking 2 kites

Postby ookpik » Thu Jul 28, 2005 6:18 pm

Has anyone tried stacking 2 kites so they function as a biplane. More power without sacrificing turning speed?

It would be kinda fun, and easy to do. You could add the second kite to the first with 4 identical lengths of line. I wonder if the kites would work best close together to create a slot/venturi effect... 4 feet apart? 6 feet apart? Maybe 10? Hmm...

Yes, use 5m stacking lines. but when connected the rear lines need to apear about 15-20cm longer when connected to get the required AoA for the top kite.

Setting up takes a bit of time to fine tune, as both kites need to fly as one. If not set correctly, kites don't turn well or may stall.

Tried some kite stacking in the past. Worked ok. The problem is that I did it in low winds (for obvious reasons), so the window was small. I had power, but the pull was too hard downwind to be able to keep upwind efficiently.

Here's a shot with 8m lines with a 17m and 19m 2003 Slingshot Fuels.

May have worked better with shorter stacking lines ?

Like Alan said, if the lines between the kites are all the same length, your top kite will be sheeted in too much and you will go downwind. But, since you had the drag of 46m of kite, you might always go down wind with those two kites.

I stacked an 11m ARC with an 8.4M ARC and I kited when the water was glassy.

Looks excellent

It would get pretty messy if you put them down in water

Dazza

don't know about earlier...
but it shouldn't just be a downwind run.
