so very sorry for everyone who is running from this monster....but as with Katrina, it comes as a BLESSING to all the kiters and windsurfers suffering through the typical summer doldrums here in the Yucatan Peninsula of Mexico.
we had two great 15 knot days "building up to" yesterday when we had 25 to 35 knot south west winds on a super flat saltwater lagoon near the tip of the peninsula....fan-fucking-tastic days of kiting!! in september no less....hehe
sorry, no pictures, too busy EDGING

Anyone that has ridden in large areas of the Bahamas, Florida and areas bordering the Gulf Of Mexico have been influenced by Rita for several days. So, yes probably 1000's of kiteboarders have been out in the fringes of it. Fortunately no one has been severely hurt or killed that I have heard about, as a result of frequent feeder band squalls despite odds to the contrary. I was able to find one image, among others, posted above.
Good luck to all the people trying to get out of the way of this monster. I hope the damage is far less than currently anticipated and that the storm continues to weaken.
There will likely be more powerful hurricanes in the tropics here and elsewhere in the world over the next couple of decades perhaps as a result of long term cycles or global warming. More about this at:
http://www.sun-sentinel.com/news/local/ ... -headlines
Some former hurricanes have headed over to Europe to interact with fall cold fronts. Similar systems claimed two experienced riders last week in Europe. Just because it's blowing doesn't mean it is worth going, kiteboarding anyway. Heads up and have a care.

We are waiting it out here in Houston. Hope Texas City levee does not suffer a lot of damage from the winds and the storm surge.
Good luck to everyone in East TX / West Louisiana!

good news for me: because of storm surge flooding my home launch just got closer. Now I only have to drive 4 miles to water. set up kite on highway and then off i go, as long as i can navigate between the houses and tree it's all good.
On a serious note, I hope everyone has come through the storm okay!
What is it with Louisiana and Hurricanes this year?
