I just got my two new boards (Undeground Double Concave 132x39 and 152x44).
They rock. Once again Underground did an amazing job.
Super fast - Starts gliding amazingly soon
Cuts through chop - Amazingly stable
Smooth transition - Incredible in waves. Heel to toeside transitions are smooth and very fast. Also slides amazingly well when doing surfaces passes or sliding into blind
Quality - Fantastic finish and same durability I was used to from the previous version
Flex - Great for generating good pop and soft/smooth landings
152x44 (custom size - normal sizes is 42)
Absolute lightwind machine - 8 knots and a 16 and I'm going upwind, jumping and doing most tricks that don't require a lot of power. I have tried other lightwind boards like Slingshot Glide and Airus Exile. I (personally) think this 'custom' version of the 152 is the superior board. It has all the benefits from the 132 as described above. But the two things that I find great are that it turns on a dime and you are able to generate great pop even in very light winds. Very different to the feeling that you have on larger boards normally.
The Exile is a very stiff board and quite heavy. It's a great lightwind board given it's really short (137cm), but not amazing in chop, waves and doesn't generate the same pop as the Underground (due to it's flex).
The SS Glide is also a great lightwind board. But the water has to be really flat as the board it really flat itself. The fins are very small, which makes it hard to ride it very flat to get some extra gliding ability.
Has anyone had any experience with the new Underground range????
Our surfboards hold really well in the carve, so we figured the difference might be in the bottom layout. The kiteboards were single concave while the surfboards run from single to double concave. This double concave forms a spine in the centre of the board. We tried a double concave, and they were so much better! The carve held really solid, landings are softer and the boards track beautifully landing from those powered kiteloop moves. We refining the double concave, as we realized it was more the spine than the double concave that we liked. The regular double concave felt quite draggy and slow compared to our existing single.
Since the single to double works so well on surfboards, why not use it on
the twins? like this:
When someone posts a review of a board,
I think it is relevant to show other boards
that have similar design characteristics.
I've always thought the Underground boards
were pretty good for a production board.
But I still think that my bottom shaping is
second to none. They are getting closer but
I'm still better at shaping with my in house
I'm sure some of the production board companies
are starting to realize how important best in class
3D CAD modeling capabliites are. But owning
the software is not enough. You have to know
how to use it and have a solid understanding
of the math behind smooth C2 (class A) surfacing.
Just to reassure everyone that the Underground boards are not shaped by trained monkeys.
All shaping is done in house with their own CNC machine, driven by Professor A Smith and Dr C Brent and their assistant Mr Roper who is good at making herbal tea and counting the biscuits.
I can vouch for everthing Xes Laro says about the boards, the 1.52 x 44 is simply the best light wind board I have ridden. We had soem great waves here last week and the 1.32 was so good, especially carving to toeside and back, very stable, eats chop like nothing else. The graphics and colours are outstanding again.
Interesting ! One of my favorite WS boards was the 172 Klepper. It had
double concaves and would transition very smoothly. One thing I
found with the double concave Klepper was that you could rock it
to one side while on plane and it would be like shifting into a faster
gear. Do you remember the golf ball like dimples one Hawaian board
shaper was putting on the bottom of his boards. Dimples about 2 in. in
diameter and 1/8 " deep. That's probably next for kiteboards.
Only 20-30 a year and at least a half
dozen are all carbon ones that I make
for myself. I won't pay for advertising
because I don't want to sell more boards.
I'm the only shaper that regularly shares
my new design ideas on this forum. I don't
see that from any of the others. Maybe
they don't because they can't. I love
posting snap shots from my CAD screen.
I'm into this for the fun of design and showing
off what I've been able to accomplish. And
of course riding my own creation. I enjoy the
work because it is a nice balance of mental
and manual effort.
It's cool for me to see other shapers following
the same path that I have and adopting
some of the same shaping concepts (and
seeing the performance results) that I have
been so adamatly preaching about in any
