Any rules as to where feet should go?

Postby adamdw » Wed Oct 04, 2006 9:24 pm

I'm trying to make my first and super simple symmetrical ply board and already got help here + zero prestige and like their idea about jumping up and down to get the stance outline right.

But despite having looked here and elsewhere, I can't find anything about where the straps should be positioned across the board.

Along the centre-line?

Any ideas as to how far in on a 40cm wide board the centre of my heel (which I assume is where most weight gets delivered to the board) should be?

I don't want to drill any more holes than necessary so any help would be good.

Thanks in advance...

40 cm board is a normal width, so straps in the midline.
Where to put those straps midline, easy. do a Jump Test..... jump on your board, using your normal stance, measure between.

Somewhere between 14" and 16" of distance between your inner screws on your footstraps. I ride 15" but on wider boards you may want to go a little wider as it helps to control the board. The board I ride is 36cm wide so 15" feels comfortable for me.

Howzit adamdw; strap placement on a twintip is a pretty simple procedure. What I usually do is mark the center of the board then measure out to either side half the distance of your stance. For instance, mine is usually 22in. so I go 11 in. on either side and mark the spot[along the center line]. Then place your feet on the two marks at the angle that feels good for your stance and mark that angle also. This will serve as your pad placement guide. Finally, determine your screw insert placement by experimenting this way. Take a footstrap, two short wood screws and washers. Screw one side of the strap into the floor then insert your foot and bend the strap over it. When it all feels comfy, screw the remaining side in and see how it feels. Adjust the strap and your screw holes until satisfied then measure the holes and transfer this measurment to the board. If your hole measurment was say,6in., go 3" on either side of your footstrap mark, at the proper angle for your foot. Drill and put your insterts in and hopefully it will come out right. On a plywood board you may be able to get away without using inserts; just screw the straps right into the wood. On my foam boards I always use inserts. Good luck and smooth riding!!!

Find centre of board . 270mm out from centre mark. 150mm width of foot inserts @22degree angle . The most usefull tool to mark angles is a Breton Plotter from any good chandlery .

measure your stance width and mark center of pads position on board on the centerline

measure your bolt spacing on your pads

transfer this measurement to the board

now you need to give heelside bias
inner blots....inside your feet on the straps
outer bolts...outer bolts on pads
inner bolts...transfer the measurement 20mm toward front of board
outer bolts...transfer the measurement 30mm to the heelside of board

this will give you perfect stance and a slight heelside bias which is essential

i use a surf shapers t square with all my mesurment pre marked on it for speed.
on my own i can rail and bond inserts on roughly ten boards a day with a beach break in there some where.
and ive never had a customer not happy with pad placement.
