What is better to start with, wood or foam?

Postby pyza » Mon Jan 22, 2007 7:43 pm

Im thinking of making a surf kiteboard. My main question would be should i make it with a wood core or a foam core? I want to make it about 5'6 in lenght. Any suggestions?

Hi

Are you making a Twin Tip or a surf style wave board?

Just to get this clear in my head you basically mean a modified regular surboard as used by surfers.

In this case I suggest you think about building a board from surfboard foam and hand laminating.

I used to build TT boards using Clark foam and polyster resin, they worked great.

Xwind got it right; build your kiteboard [surf kiteboard] out of surfboard foam. It's really just a mini surfboard anyway so treat it like one. I've built a bunch over the years. When you decide to build TTs though, this realm is a whole different animal and requires much stronger glass jobs then surfboards. Some things you can count on though are fumes, dust and toxic chemicals. The wonderful world of boardbuilding!

yes, I would advise the same thing: foam

If it's clark foam, choose a 80kg/m3 density ( more shocks on a kite than a surfboard)

perhaps it's a bit far from your country, but F Pacou, french shaper for "Wave"s" makes special cores for your needs:

here's his blog

ask me if you need to contact him in french

:D
