Kiteboarding in Iran?

Postby JChau » Wed Mar 28, 2007 3:38 am

I get a chance going to Tehran 10 days fr 1st April, I wonder if any spot gd for kiteboarding nearby? It seems the Caspian Sea is just 1-2 hr away. And too far for me going to Persian Gulf! Also is it the right season?

Many thanx

I think you're taking risk at this time going there IMO.
I would rather go to Thailand, St. Lucia or DR to find everything,
But good luck :bye:

Be surprised...on the Caspian in an area commonly known as "Sho-mal", spring and fall are very windy. Shomal is not a place name as such, meaning its not on a map. Its more of a colloqial term for this northern portion of Iran on the south caspian shore. I think the name, while used in Farsi, has been derived from Arabic "North", Shamal.

April will be warming, but a shortie is still the best bet...may want to bring kite pants. shorts are frowned upon.

I think the region can good winds, maybe check the local weather stations.

If you go, make sure to ask for the laws...covering your knees could be one, so bring long pants for sure.

And PLEASE make picture of the beaches where you kite. Otherwise it is very hard to get those beach info, I need it for http://www.kitebeaches.com

Have a good trip and enjoy! But be careful before you go on the water, check with police to avoid trouble. There was a case where 2 sports fisher had to stay in prison for 2 years because of fishing of their private yacht close to their water zone...

In some muslim countries and under some regimes even flying a kite has been illegal. The Taliban in Afganhistan, for example, banned kite flying.

Radical islam is not very tolerant of fun in general (and cartoons in particular) and Iran (although most Iranian citizens would probably enjoy seeing kiting) certainly has its share of radical nutballs starting with its president.

Perhaps some swimwear from this website would be appropriate for kiting with the mullahs.

Good luck.
