Pyhae-Luosto in Finland

Postby Miche » Fri Nov 30, 2007 9:26 am

Hi there

End of December I will be in Pyhä, Finland. Can anyone tell me if there are snowkiting options and what the winds would be like?

How long is it possible to ride during the day? After 3pm, is it too dark already?

Thanks for any advice.

Sorry to say, but the end of December is the darkest time and you are traveling north from the arctic circle so it will be dark. At the arctic circle there is one day (was it 22nd December this year?) when sun does not rise above the horizon at all and the further north you go the more days in dark there are. Off course at the Rovaniemi level there will be some light at the middle of the day, but it is dark after 3pm even in the southern Finland at that time of year.

The wind in here depends on the high and low pressures and is unpredictable too long forward, but when low pressure is passing the wind can be between 0-40knots and even more in the top of highest hills in north. Usually the wind is 4-20knots. If high pressure is on the wind could be dead for one or two weeks.

I have not been kiting at that area so I do not know the places, but PM your e-mail address to me and I will get you in contact with one guy that lives and kites in that area so you will get more information from him.

I have been kiting once top of Kultakero. Not very good. Too small area, but you can ride there still. Much better area is Noitatunturi, but there you have to ski about 5km from Pyhätunturi Hotel. You need climbing skins or snow shoes and very good orienteering skills becouse there are no any trail that time of year to Noitatunturi.

I have been Luosto summer time so I know area over timber line. I think Luosto is best place snow kite in that area, you can eaven use ski lift to get to top of the hill.

You can see area here: (just make sure you copy/paste whole link if its broke n to several lines).

Direct links to places I spoke about:

Noitatunturi:

Luosto:

Yellow area is over timber line, but you can´t trust that 100%. For example Ukonhattu looks like very good spot and its not as far a way from Hotel as Noitatunturi, but there is too much small trees map is not tell everything.

About light. You can read map without head torch about 9.30-15.30 if sky is clear. If there are clouds you can read map 10.00-15.00. You can start to rig you gear and pack them away in dark so you will get 6-7h riding every day. (of couse you need wind).

Photos from Saariselkä last year if you take a look them you get the picture how much there is light if sky is clear. aroud 12.00 you can take photos ISO100 without tripod! That was mainly backcountry skiing trip but we used kites when it was possible.
