Doesn't look very good. Cold water and gusty. The wind is shifty, gusty, full of mexicans, beyond sketchy launch. I was there once and saw multiple people get dragged on launch and pretty banged up. A few years back the gust put one guy in the tree in the middle of the cove, another in the bushes; we had to help have them airlifted out both times.

I was at Mojave 2 weeks ago. The wind was good for about three hours and then it went offshore in a major way. The wierd thing was that the old man under the tree was gone and there were a ton of cars and gang bangers. I didn't see any authorities the whole time I was there.. I camped and there was loud music all night. It was really a scary place to be with that element of people and no one keeping order. too bad, It was nice place not long ago

Wayne,
The water is still cold. They keep chaninging the level of the lake and it's staying around 50 deg. That doesnt matter. The wind is north until Monday. Hit up Katherines.

@ Surfarii,
Unfortunately, there isn't anything untrue in the other posts. Kiters should avoid Mojave on the weekends. The Rangers have written the place off. This will be the 1st 90 degree weekend this year so it'll be packed at the cove. Gang-bangers and illegal's infest the place like cockroaches. They relieve themselves anywhere they feel like it, even on a nearby tent. They even set the place on fire a few weeks ago. The wind is gusty and the dust devils have sent more than a few kiters to the trauma center. All these problems and this is our "good" place to kite. :thumb: It may not be much but its all we got! :thumb:

I am sorry to hear about the problems at the lake. Hope things get sorted out for the better somehow soon.

I've heard about a number of encounters between hang gliders and dust devils. They have been suggested as a source of problems in a couple of kiting incidents years back but haven't had much more information than that. Could you provide some details about what happened in the kiting accidents you mentioned? Thanks.

When launching at mojave there is a small hill just upwind of launch this is a perfect thermal trigger. Thermals can travel over the surface of the water until they build up enough strength to lift of the water themselves or when they hit a trigger. From what I have heard from some witnesses the loftings occured with the kiter walking up the beach with the kite overhead right behind this thermal trigger. Another accident was a tangled bridle at launch. That person had to be life flighted! Every time I have been there I see people walk up the beach with the kite at 1200 why? When I walk up the beach I park my kite over the water! Is jack really gone? I will call my local connections! see yall this week!

first off there's no such lake as lake mojave...

Strange but true...check your records.

Second I know this launch you speak of, and my guess is you simply do not.

Yeah, you can die there no sweat, it's easy.

just put a kite up in the wrong place, or any place at the wrong time...been there done that.

the wind you kite is dead on shore, basically , so forget the keep it over the water thing, just not possible...

This hill you speak of is a rotor generator---the old circle jerk is alive and well.

The Mary Poppins syndrome is no aberration...

it's locked and loaded, ready to go, just waiting for anyone who thinks they got it dicked...

(most all visitors think they have it dicked)

My advise?

listen to the locals, if they say "don't do it now it's evil, then don't do it...

if no one is there to advise you, and its not dead on shore, don't do it it's evil, and if it is dead on shore?

and there are RVs on the beach, don't do it they also disrupt the flow and cause rotors...

hey, knock yourself out, you won't be the first....

I have been going there for six years! Yes the hill does create rotor but that is not the problem. The problem is from thermals leaving the ground. The wind when south is not on shore. Why do I get the feeling that afflatus is an old man that likes to talk crap! Oh yeah I met him at mojave and thought so this is the troubled old man. So evolved!
