Cabrinha Race Series 2

Well, if the season opener in April started with a ROAR, Race night 2 was even better! Forty-three racers stated in a flood, which got even stronger. The wind was stronger prior to racing, about 20-24 and then continued to lighten slightly. The strong flood and lightening winds caused only two races to be run.

Rumor had it that Ken Winner (North) spent the winter with some of his team concentrating on racing; “unveiling” his latest racing stick. A direction with a square tail and twin windsurfing looking slalom fins emerging from the fin boxes on a outward angle. His efforts seem to be paying off; Ken finished 5th overall (13,2) while teammate Sky Solbach (1,7) captured, third, although there is a protest pending against him for actions in the second race at the leeward mark. Anthony Chavez (Naish) finished second overall for the evening (2,4) while testing a new stick from LMG. In the first night of racing, Chavez used a board by Jeff Kafka (Cabrinha) and finished first; his choice of boards doesn’t seem to make a significant difference. Shawn Richman (WainmanHawaii) finished FIRST overall (3,1) while using his new production kites and a Kafka board.

Geoff Headington (SS) continued to race well finishing 4th overall (5,3) using a NJS design stick, while John Gomes (Cabrinha) also on an NJS design, continues to be very competitive. He had a 4th in the first race and has a protest pending in the 2nd race which would give him another 4/5 finish and 4/5 overall. As I indicated after night # 1; watch out for Headington and Gomes.

You may be asking where’s last year’s Cabrinha Race Series Champion Kafka? Well he was testing a new set of fins which seemed to work when it is windier just prior to the races; he finished 8th (8,13), and Chip was completing his race committee requirements.

It seemed to me, that the port start of the line was favored in the first race even though there was a pretty good flood, and so did a about 15-20% of the fleet…they all did well. In the second race, over half the fleet started on port.

A quick update on the pending protest from race night #1. Frank Wittke won his protest and also received “redress” as he was “taken out” at the start. He was awarded a 6th, his average finish for races 2 and 3 where he was 6th in both.

I want to take a moment to give a special “shout out” to the St. Francis; they not only do a great job hosting the Cabrinha Race Series, they are now displaying the new Cabrinha Race Series perpetual trophy “front and center” as you enter the Club.

Thursday’s, May 15 race was cancelled due to a lack of wind as was the protest committee meeting to review the May 1 protests.
The Cabrinha Race Series is sponsored by Cabrinha Kiteboarding, Ozonetravel, Adventure Sports, Miami, and hosted by the St. Francis Yacht Club
