BKSA Round 2 Barrow in Furness - Cumbria UK

For immediate release

National Kitesurfing Championship Comes to NW England
British Kitesurfing Association National Championships, Barrow-in-Furness, Cumbria, 13-15 June

The British Kitesurfing Association are returning to Barrow-in-Furness for the second year in a row as round 2 of the National Championships comes to Walney Island.

Last year saw some wind and some outstanding riding to complete some but not all of the classes in this eco-friendly wind-powered sport.

Competitors will be coming from all over the UK to compete, with Pro Men and Pro Ladies divisions fighting over a prize fund of £2000. There will also be fleets in Amateur Men, Amateur Ladies, Seniors (Over 35) and Juniors.

The long-term weather forecast for the event looks great and it is hoped the 50 competitors will be jumping high with their kites.

Also on the competition side is a Freestyle Kitelandboarding and Kitebuggy Jam. The three and four wheel buggies and boards will be piloted into spins, jumps and crazy tricks over the hard packed sandy beach of Earnse Bay on Saturday and Sunday.

Coming back to show their support are a number of static flyers including a flying 80 ft gecko! These are large single line kites in the shape of animals and are very visually pleasing, these kites will be flying in winds from 5mph up to about 18mph only.

There will also be free Power Kite taster lessons for members of the public so if you have never had a go come on down and see what great fun and exercise it is for all members of the family. These workshops will be running all weekend.

In the event of no wind there will be Thundercat race boat demos. These boats are the water equivalent of F1 car racing and pull 2.5G on the turn. They have a higher power to weight ratio than an F1 car and are great fun for jumping waves and on flat water. These will be on the water at various times during the weekend especially if winds are light.

Saturday night sees local recently signed band ‘Sevens’ play at Vickerstown Institute which were the talking point until the end of 2007 among the riders and crew.

Gary Powell, regional event organiser, said: “It is great to have the BKSA back for a second year with the support of Vestas and West Lakes Renaissance and all the other local sponsors on board making the event bigger and better for everyone in the region.”

Richard Gowers, Chairman of the BKSA: "We are really happy to have Vestas ‘No 1 in modern energy’, on board for the Barrow-in-Furness event where the BKSA will be harnessing the power of the wind in their kites like the wind turbines - to power along the shores of Walney Island."
