Speed board design

Postby JMF » Mon May 19, 2008 4:16 pm

Hi Guys

I curoius to know if anyone has any tips on a good speed board design. The design that most people seem to use is the one pictured below. What are the basics I should look at in terms of concave, board length, rail and fin and foot placement. ?

Directional board you will need 2
or a single Bi-directional

Flat board
length - 130 -150cm or longer (but better to match it to your height and weight.)
Rail = sharp and straight
Fins on heel side edge
Foot placement = more towards the tail if directional.

2007 production board from Fanatic - Dr Gonzo Twin Speed is 136 x 33

If you make one would be interested in seeing a photo.. :D

Thanks for the reply, this is what I came up with so far, just finished the rocker table not that I would be needing much rocker. It's based on a directional (starboard tack) core (Airex C70) will be 12mm tapered down to 5mm epoxy rails, I'm also working on a modular weight system for the nose of the board not shown in case it gets a little slap happy. Looking at a glass carbon layup and have some ideas for the underside I want to try implement.

the out line looks pretty standard but i would recomend putting the nose fin nearer to the toe side edge. There's been some strange bottom shapes on some of the new boards on the beach here at the kitespeed event at fuerteventura but its early days to see if they are any good.

where in england are you?

Can anyone post some photos of some current speed-board designs here? I don't see any boards made here, but would be interested to see photos from the various speed locations around the globe.

Post 'em if you got 'em! I know you GPS guys have some special boards, right?

No 2 boards are the same apart from the exelerator production speed board. Mine is just a lump of ply cut out with a jigsaw and coated in glass and resin so its easy to modify but still goes well. im sure if you do a little serching youn will find some picks.

Hi Guys,
These are my 2 speed boards I made. Both have two 6mm plywood sheets glued with epoxy, one finished with 6oz carbon top and bottom, the other with two 5oz fiberglass on bottom and 1 on top. Measurements are 147cm x 29cm, stance is 53cm . The carbon board has 2mm of con cave flatning out in front of rear f/strap. The fiberglass board has no concave and has my fastest times (42knts in 18-25knts), but have not tested the carbon one in the same wind, so no conclusion yet on concave.
Both are flat from tail to center of front foot strap ( 85cm) , where nose lift starts and increases to approx. 50mm.
The only thing I may change is move the front foot strap forward 1-2cm for more stability.
Cheers :)
