The other day I mentioned my kiteboarding budy that I was going nuts trying to find my black colored board time after time in the ocean. It is very dificult to see and have nearly lost it 10 times. I told him that I would put some intense colored stickers to make it more visible. He told me that intense colors atract sea predators. Is this true? What other option to make my board more visible?

I belive the bull sharks here refer to it as "yummy yellow"

try orange, thats why life vests are that color

but have seen condtions where they hit the yellow time after time, while the other colors didnt get bothered. :!:

Don't think bright colors are a problem...shinny metal is more likely a problem.

I'll give you one important tip.
Never pee in your wetsuit.
From reaserch I have read urine attracts sharks almost as much as blood.
Urine will also attract sharks from greater distances.

Dawn and dusk also apear to be riskier times.

For your black board a gojo would help a ton for spotting your board.

Aftewr a while you develop an instinct as to where your board came off and how far you are from it.

Anyway I'm glad you are off your leash...that's the most important thing!

Black or dark boards in general are not a good choice

If you kite where great whites are, a black board floating around could , imo, attract them.
But if you listen to divers, anything shiny, eg; your sliver watch or a silver board, attracts sharks, but more so barracudas.
Sharks are more interested in movement then color. You splashing around in a yellow or black wet-suit does not make a diff.
They go after the splashing.
Same goes for the board.
Just imagine looking up from the ocean floor. A red or yellow board looks the same as a black one against the sun. But a silver one would stand out.
That's why fish are darker on their belly.

Honestly ... you ask lots of questions and some of them are literally screaming for pimp & bash answers but this one is so funny I could not believe it when I read it.

Have you been scuba diving some time ? or saw some vids about underwater life ? well ... looks like most of the fishes down there are pretty much colorful ? so if " colors " would attract predators then all fishes would be grey or something like that ?

If you are worried about predators you should eat lots os garlic before every session... believe me it works so well not even bystanders want to be around you . :naughty: specially when is hot and you start to sweat .

Saludos

so, why even bother answering any questions?
no matter if they are a bit off,

When you see a shark, ca.14ft long, Tiger, right next to you,...let's talk then.

FUBAR!

No, they are not attracted by bright colors. Sharks for example are color blind. They are attracted by smell. They can smell your blood from long distances. So, you can wear read, orange, yellow, anything...just make sure you don't get cut and bleed.

And almost forgot, shatks can a;so get attracted by shape. For instance, a person on top of a board might look like a seal for a shark looking from under the water. For some sharks, seals are part of their diet. So, in regions were there are seals and sharks, it might me a bit dangerous to be kiting or windsurfing with your nice black wetsuit
