It would maybe be helpful to learn the basics on a computer screen before you go out. What do you think? Does such a thing exist somewhere on the net?

i don't think that'll help too much ..
best would be to learn the basics with a small (buggy) kite - windtools had a bar w handles attached @ the ends - this one with a 'friendly' kite - say a quadrifoil q2003 or an old q3 (no power-shape) will give you a good feeling for the kite, also a first impression for the forces you'll have to handle.
plus: you get to know the real wind - i've seen enough beginners that didn't come from windsurfing or another wind-related sport and
had real problems they never stood in the correct angle and therefore tried to park the kite wrong (because zenit wasn't where they expected) and stuff...
i think a computer screen wouldn't help you that much concerning nature ...

i was what i call a 'bad speedsurfer' and had a lot of buggy-kiting experience.
so, my first meters on the board took me about 5 minutes.
that's a thing i could tell everyone who wants to start kiteboarding:
if it's fall - go get yourself an old, used buggy and 1-2 kites (buggy about 150€ max. abd each kite 100€)
and go make the tires scream as often as you can. i've never experienced such a strong thing with the wind and you - which courses to ride - how hard you can push the upwind - angle - it's not like sailing cause it's not necessary to keep your vessel gliding ...
